Magnificent Skiing in Slavsko

The beautiful country of Ukraine is fast gaining a reputation for being an excellent snow skiing destination. There are plenty of ski areas to choose from and the prices for lift passes and equipment rental are reasonable by European standards. Amateurs and experts alike are enjoying the natural beauty of the majestic Carpathian Mountains and the perfect snow conditions found at the ski resort area of Slavsko situated in the valley of the Slavka and Opir Rivers.

Slavsko (sometimes called Slavske) is one of the most popular of the Carpathian ski resorts. Located within easy access from Lviv, Kiev and Kharko, Slavsko has numerous ski slopes of varying levels of difficulty on four different forest-covered mountains.

Mt. Trostian is 1232 meters above sea level with almost 500 meters of vertical drop, offering a variety of interesting runs to challenge experienced skiers. It is generally agreed that the views from Mt. Trostian are some of the most breath-taking in the area. Politekh Mountain is the perfect venue for beginners to work on their snow skiing skills. It has a gradual hill and three tow lifts for absolute beginners with gentle slopes to start offering the beginner a challenge. Mt. Pohar rises to a height of nearly 1000 meters with two tow lifts and snow skiing runs more suited to advanced beginners and intermediate skiers. Mt. Velykyy Verkh (often referred to as Zakhar Berkut) is 1242 meters high with a 550 meter vertical drop which, while not as varied as Mt. Trostian, still offers a challenge to intermediate and advanced skiers.

Slavsko first started gaining recognition as a skiing centre during the late nineteenth century. The first ski jumps and cableways were built in the 1920s and 1930s. During the Soviet regime, Slavsko became the main training grounds for the USSR Olympic snow skiing team.

The snow skiing season stretches from late November through to late March. In the summer months holidaymakers visit Slavsko to enjoy fishing, walking, hiking and horse riding excursions through the scenic surrounding areas.

Whatever outdoor activity travelers enjoy, they will find that a visit to Slavsko, Ukraine, will be a most memorable and rewarding one.
