Kherson currently has a population of about 400 000 residents and is situated on the Dnieper river and seaport. The city of Kherson was founded on June 29, 1778 on the site of former fortification Oleksadrivs’kyi Shanets ruined by the Turks, by Rince Potiomkin. Kherson was named in honor of Chersonesus of Tauris founded by the Greeks in the 5th century before Christ.

Despite the fact that the region is incredibly beautiful, there are relatively few noteworthy towns and cities to be found here. Perhaps the most noteworthy city is the administrative center of the region, Mykolayiv. The region is sometimes also referred to as the Mykolaiv Oblast.
