Kherson currently has a population of about 400 000 residents and is situated on the Dnieper river and seaport. The city of Kherson was founded on June 29, 1778 on the site of former fortification Oleksadrivs’kyi Shanets ruined by the Turks, by Rince Potiomkin. Kherson was named in honor of Chersonesus of Tauris founded by the Greeks in the 5th century before Christ.
The Kherson Oblast or Region takes up approximately 28,500 square kilometers of land, which is mainly flat. Kherson is situated in the Black Sea lowland and near the Sea of Azov. Kherson also lies close to the lower Dnieper, which is classified as a Steppe zone and holds the principal river supplying water to the southern parts of Ukraine. Today the borders of Kiev are very different from when the region of Kiev was first formed in 1932. Kiev Oblast is now situated in the center of Ukraine with the River Dnieper running through it. Kiev's borders meet up with the oblasts of Vinnytsva, Zhytomyr, Poltava, Cherkasy, Homel and Chernihiv.
