The Dniester rises in the Ukrainian Carpathians and flows south to the Black Sea. 1380km in length, once river traffic was more common. Between 1918 and 1939 Zaleszczyki was in Poland. Here was the border to Rumania. and before that the town was part of the Austro Hungarian province of Galicia. There was an army barracks here. Czernowitz, The Vienna of the East, is just down the road on another big river, The Prut.
