Ukraine and Istanbul – Part 8
In July, 2011, Pat and I flew to Kiev, Ukraine, and boarded the Viking Lomonosov for a 12-day cruise on the Dnieper River to the Black Sea; then we flew to Istanbul, Turkey, for four days. In this final video, we tour the Basilica Cistern, built around the 4th century AD. This cathedral-size cistern is an underground chamber approximately 453 ft by 212 ft - about 105,000 sq ft in area - capable of holding 2,800,000 cu ft of water. The ceiling is supported by a forest of 336 marble columns, each 30 ft high. Then, dinner and a spectacular view of the city from the top of the Conrad Hotel; finally, off to Attaturk Airport for the long flights home.
