  • Average salary in Ukraine

How high is the average salary in Ukraine? I've heard everything between 28 US a month to 60 US a month.

Is there a big difference between the different parts of the country? Which part is the poorest? How does Kharkov rate in comparison to Kiev, Lviv, Krim, Donbass etc.?

RUbbish! Who will survive on $60 per month here? Even the lowest qualification secretary in th eoffice receives $100 per month. Generally, secretary salary is $100-$300 per month. Managers - 150-350$ per month, administrators - 200-500$ and higher. Who told you this fairy-tale about 28$ pe month? OUr lowest pensions are this high. The smaller the town the poorer and more provincial it is. I was startled at poverty in small towns of Crimea.

      According to this paper

It seems like the average salary is a little more than 100 dollars.
      http://day.kiev.ua/DIGEST/2002/25/den-pln/dp3.htm

Mr. Sakhan treated the shocking statistic with his inherent optimism. “Today, the average salary in Ukraine is officially established at 398 hryvnias. Considering how much people get off the record, it is safe to assume that the actual amount is 50-60% higher. In other words, the actual living standard is higher.” One might as well ask the minister of labor whether this means that the state is gradually putting up with being cheated by its citizens. 250-300 hryvnias is an official salary only at the spending units, meaning that the amount does not actually and significantly increase due to various additional payments. True, considering the shadow money turnover at budget-financed institutions, such meager official pay does not call forth any special sympathy.

This may be true for Kiev and Odessa, outside these city's many do have to survive on $50-60 a month. I know several very well educated people who make this kind of money with a full time job which leaves them little time to earn some extra bucks in the shadow economy. As a general rule, public sector jobs (teachers, medical profession) receive a meager payment.

I'm not talking about government officials "close to the heat", most of them would be in Kiev anyway.

I met an African guy working in an Internet cafe as well who made 10 hryvnias a day (which I suppose would be around 40 US a month)and I dated a girl who worked in waiting who made the same amount of money. I also met a female doctor who claimed her regular salary was only 20 US a month but 40 US if you counted the black money included. This was all in Kharkov though.

It would be interesting to see what the median salary is as the average salary doesn't always describe what "most" people make in third world countries.

it's an official salary. By tutoring teachers usually do much more money. My father, for example has three salaries on tutoring. He's a teacher.

I want to say tha tthese talks aboutlow salaries in Ukraine are very helpful for scammers who use them to get money from soft-hearted foreigners. I don't support such low-salary talks.

From BBC Tuesday, 19 November, 2002,
                http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/not_in_we...ts/2490551.stm

                Ukraine wages overcome poverty line
Ukraine's pro-presidential tabloid Fakty I Kommentarii reports a 22% increase in average wages since the beginning of the year, which "have at last risen above the poverty line". An average Ukrainian now earns nearly $74 a month.
"The lowest wages are still in Ukrainian agriculture" at $36, the paper says regretfully.
The average wage in the heath care and social protection sector, $42 a month, is also below the poverty line.

Teachers earn about $65 a month... Minted or maybe not.

Support it or not these are the reported figures in Kuchma's pet publication... Are they likly to play up low wages to attack the leader they support. Read Holos a few times, put yourself in the picture.

Oh yes why do so many teacher from west Ukraine work in Poland.

Well, So the BBC says ......

I'm a bit too old to be taking as gospel what the media tells me.

Does anyone here live there and know from experience what the people realy earn (under and over the table).

                    Len,

There is a catch here ... if ppl DO earn 50-60 USD a month they are not likely to have easy access to internet. Thus i dont expect them to waste their scarce recources on educating us via Ukie.com.

Anyway, what i understand my info should be fairly reliable.

                    On average:
                    30-40 USD for pensioners
50-60 USD it is for many public sector jobs
100-150 USD for ppl working at private companies (accoubants, laywers)
                    150-400 for managers

In Kiev and Odessa it can be much higher compared to the rest of the country.

                        Len

Info is from a close friend living and working in Zaporozhye (eastern ukraine). Figures are supposed to be average, that means that they are not accurate for Kiev and Odessa.

Like Moscow is not Russia, Kiev is not Ukraine. Salaries can be 2, 3 or 4 times average in Kiev. Also people working for multinationals and NGO's are mostly located in Kiev. They increase the average there. My understanding is that pensions are pretty similar everywhere though.

                            $150.00 for English Course

I have a friend in Kiev she is a teacher and has told me she earns 100.00 US a month. I have spoken with her on the phone. She can only speak basic English. We have discussed her coming to the U.S. for a visit as well as me going there to visit her. I am a single father of a 10-year old girl so it will be a neat trick for me to visit her. She has told me an English course is 150.00 U.S. Does this sound correct? The reason I ask is because I offered to pay for it and when we discussed it her friend that speaks good english mentioned "So if you send 200.00" then...

She was explaining that western union would be best.

My friend also told me she could get a tourist visa for 500.00 U.S.

                            I met her through foreignwomenguide.com.

Some of the post here have brought up concern although she seems sincere. I sent her a laptop but she never received it. She said she didn't care but was sad it was lost. It was returned a few weeks later by customs.

P.S. Irene1972 if you happen upon this post I tried to add you to my yahoo messenger. I could use a friend in Ukraine.

I would appreciate any advice and may start a seperate thread in open about information getting U.S. tourist visa's. I paid an attorney for information and after doing so his explaining of ways to get around needing to meet in the last three years to get a fiance visa explained I had to be physically disabled. Oh well, I guess it was worth 100.00 to find that out. lol

                              what a nasty scam!!

Listen, I can buy a tourist pacage to Spain for two weeks for approximately the same sum that this "visa" costs. No visa costs $500. And no course of English is $150. The most expensive way to learn English is with a tutor (private lessons) and it's usually $5 per lesson or with the most expensive tutors (usually used to prepare a linguistic student for exams or an abiturient to enter liguistic faculty of University) is $10 per lesson. Even if so, if she takes lessons twice a week it'll sum up to $80 per month. And all the courses are much cheaper because it's a group study. What a blazen lie. And this terrible $500 visa!!! Why don't you think a little and understand that no visa costs $500? Besides, as for coming I used to work in tourist business and recently met a former collegue and she said that they never ever succeeded in opening tourist visas for our people in three countries: USA, Canada and Australia. She CAN'T open tourist visa to America. And who is this friend of her? Sure, her scammer partner. There're other ways. One of them is K-1 or fiancee visa. Another is student visa provided a student has found a sponsor (a very expensive option). IN some cases it can be business visa but mostly for scientists. It's hardly possible to open business visa for a regular person. WHo will be interested in him while you have many others like him? However, our reserchers are in high value, though it's a bit diminished at present.
Please don't sent these liers any money. They lie about the costs in both cases. Sorry.
Very nice of you to add me to your Yahoo messenger. I would be delighted to do the same provided I know your handle.
