  • looking for great grandparents in Tovste

Hello! I’ve been trying to do some genealogical research and I’m at a dead end with some of my great-great-grandparents. Any suggestions about where I can find more information, corrections on my attempts at surname spelling, or any information about the people themselves/their pedigree would be greatly appreciated.

Here is the information I have:

    Alexander Dunayeski – born July 21, 1876
    Married in 1900 to
Mary Lisy – Born September or August 19, 1878

According to my grandparents, they were from Galicia from a village they spelled “Touste.” I’m assuming this is Tovste/Tluste. They emigrated some time between 1908 and 1915. Alexander became a naturalized US citizen in 1924 in the town of Lincoln, RI.

A bit more info I have: Alexander’s parents are Michael Dunayeski and Matrona Lukasiewik and Mary’s parents are Daniel Lisy and Lillian Kameneska.

Again, thank you in advance for any help you may be able to give.

    Jon from Rhode Island

    Jon,

Your grandparents may have spelled the town correctly. Take a look a ShtetlSeeker at JewishGen ShtetlSeeker – Town Search

Look up Touste for Eastern Europe, and choose spelled exactly in your choice. You will find Touste in the Ukraine.

    You will find:

    Touste, Kut-Tolstetskiy, Tolstoye, Torste populated place 4916' N 2605' E E M U G Ukraine 213.1 miles WSW of Kyyiv 5026' N 3031' E

Let me know if you have a problem with the site, and I will help you. Good luck.

      Welcome Jon.

Your ancestors were from one of these two places:

From late 18th century to 1918, wies/village Touste was a fair size village with both a Greek Catholic and a Roman Catholic Church. The Jewish Kahal was also in Touste. Skalat was the POWIAT (administrative district - county) and Grzymalow was the GMINA (judicial-tax district) > Tarnipol region > Galicia/Halyczyna Province, administered by ethnic Poles for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. During the Interwar Period 1919-1938 this region came under Reconstituted Poland's domain. Technically Poland had not existed as a geopolitical entity for the previous 125 yrs. Post WW2 this region became the Ternopilska oblast/region, part of the SSR Ukraine, under Soviet domain until 1991, when Ukraine became independent.

Today the selo/village Tovste (), which was founded in 1654 on the Gnylka River, still exists > Husyatynskij (Husyatyn) raion/district > Ternopilska oblast/region > Ukraine. Population today 547. By the end of WW2, the Polish residents were either shipped to Siberia by the Soviets or resettled to Poland.

There are both GC and RC Church Registers available on film. What religion did your immigrant families practice?

Very important resource for anyone researching family w/origins in Historical Galicia/Halyczyna Province.
      New Page 1
      __________________________________________________________________________________

The second, is miasto/town Tluste that also had both a RC and GC Church > Zaleszczyki was the powiat and Tluste was the gmina > Tarnipol region > Galicia/Halyczyna Province, administered by ethnic Poles for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. During the Interwar Period the Zaleszczyki district became a part of Northern Bukowina, under Romanian domain. Post WW2 this region became a part of SSR Ukraine, under Soviet domain.

Exc link. Under WHERE IS TOVSTE an explanation for the two Tovste. A MUST FULLY EXPLORE.
Tluste/Tovste, Ukraine - Life and Times

I readily found RC Church Registers filmed by LDS for Tluste.

It might be interesting to know that a search for Touste as place of origin in the Ellis Island records shows 263 individuals coming from there. You also pick up 5 from Toustenko, and 2 from Toustego.

Cannot find any Dunayeski in Ternopil, but did see several Dunayeska (female version of surname) living in Ternopil.

Some Lisy still living in Tovste in red, others in Husyatyn in green.
