New bi-alphabetic signs in the Kyiv/Kiev metro, preparing for the EURO 2012 football tournament [03:53]
As the last underground trains one late evening in March 2012 run through a Kyiv/Kiev metro station, workers prepare new bi-alphabetic signs to replace the old single alphabet Cyrillic signs hanging on the walls of the underground station. The new signs are easy readable but the totally lack the beauty and patina of the industrial era Soviet they replace, a shame really. On the new signs, the names of the stations are merely transliterated from Ukrainian Cyrillic into English Latin. Frustrating, the lack of translation (eg. Zoloty Vorota translates into Golden Gate) leaves visitors without command of Ukrainian without any hint of the meaning of the names. With no real help from this awkward Ukrainian-English, transparency is supposedly provided by a unique hotel room style 3 digit code number assigned to each station with big ugly numbers on the signs. But no one can explain where to obtain the code breaker! Minus 3 stars for yet another typical "solution" in Ukraine, where the workers struggle to find the right drill for the rawplugs to fit the signs.

Ukraine and Istanbul - Part 8 [06:11]
In July, 2011, Pat and I flew to Kiev, Ukraine, and boarded the Viking Lomonosov for a 12-day cruise on the Dnieper River to the Black Sea; then we flew to Istanbul, Turkey, for four days. In this final video, we tour the Basilica Cistern, built around the 4th century AD. This cathedral-size cistern is an underground chamber approximately 453 ft by 212 ft - about 105000 sq ft in area - capable of holding 2800000 cu ft of water. The ceiling is supported by a forest of 336 marble columns, each 30 ft high. Then, dinner and a spectacular view of the city from the top of the Conrad Hotel; finally, off to Attaturk Airport for the long flights home.

The pictures of the undeground monastery(12century) in Stradch,Страдч, (Lviv region, Ukraine) and the cave monastery(16century) in Krekhiv,Крехів (Lviv region). Now they are places of physical and spiritual healing. The monastery in Stradch was second after the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra monastery in Ukraine underground in Kievan Rus' (Kyivan) and Galicia-Volyn (Halytsko-Volyn)principality.It was stored at a high mountain on the left bank of the river near the village Vereschytsa. Mentioned in the Galicia-Volyn chronicle from 1242 as "Cave Domazhyrova". Archaeological research found that the monastery consisted of incoming gallery (length ca. 40 m), moves the total length of 270 m and a few cells, which are placed at a depth of approx. 20 m. At the top of the mountain there was a fortified hill-fort. The monastery ceased to exist approx. 14 cent. In our time preserved many legends about the monastery, the monks destroy the Mongol Tatars. The monastery in Krekhiv was established in the 16th century by two monks from the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, Joel and Silvester, who settled in nearby caves. Around 1612 or 1618 the owner of Zhovkva, Stanisław Żółkiewski offered the monks land to build their monastery, later surrounded with fortifications during the second half of the 17th century to defend it from roaming Tatar hordes. In the 18th century the monasteries prosperity rose and wooden buildings were replaced with stone ones which stand there today. At the beginning of the 19th century ...
