(Update #2) Memorial to a German Colony, Part 2 - Muzhylovychi, Ukraine [13:17]
Updated: 07/27/2011 My German Lineage ... one aspect of my family's Germanic ancestry is the discovery that a certain small village called MUZHYLOVYCHI (initially called MÜNCHENTHAL in German then MUZYLOWICE in Polish), not far from present day L'viv (Ukraine), holds a special meaning to us. For in this village, we can trace our ancestry to the time period of the 1750s, when one of our great-great-grandfathers settled in this hamlet when it became a German Catholic Colony. From that early time up until approximately 1895, the maternal side of our family lived, worked, died, and were buried (for the most part) in the nearby Roman Catholic cemetery. This video shows the MÜNCHENTHAL GERMAN CATHOLIC CEMETERY MEMORIAL PROJECT ... a project to memorialize all the departed German Colonists who are buried in this cemetery with the creation of a proper memorial.

Ukraine: Olesko Castle [14:33]
The Olesko Castle (Ukrainian: Олеський замок) is currently located within the borders of the present-day Busk Raion in Ukraine. The first historical records of the castle are in a document dated 1390, when Pope Boniface IX gave Halych, a Catholic bishop, this castle as a gift. It is located about seventy-five kilometers from Lviv, the largest city in western Ukraine. The Olesko Castle, oval in shape, stands on top of a small hill, about fifty meters in height. A moat and a wall surrounds it, which serves as a defence for the castle. The castle is also surrounded by a dense swamp. The land that the castle sat on changed ownership many times. It was originally on the border of land of Volhynia and land of Lviv. The castle was, at different times, owned by Poland, Lithuania, and Hungary. It became a political landmark in the 14th century when movable borders between the three aforementioned countries ran through its territory. Battles for ownership of the castle were constant. A deep well in the basement of the castle was used as an escape route for besieged prisoners. In the 15th century, the castle was changed from being a defense point, to simply a getaway for aristocracy. The castle is perhaps most famous for being the birthplace of the Polish king Jan III Sobieski, the hero of the Battle of Vienna. He often lived there, and collected many of the artworks currently displayed in the present-day museum. Another Polish king, King Michał Korybut Wiśniowiecki, was also born ...

Ukraine: Lychakiv Cemetery, Lviv [15:09]
Lychakiv Cemetery (Polish: Cmentarz Łyczakowski; Ukrainian: Личаківський цвинтар, translit. Lychakivs'kyi tsvyntar) is a famous and historic cemetery in Lviv, Ukraine. Since its creation in 1787 as Łyczakowski Cemetery, it has been the main necropolis of the city's inteligentsia, middle and upper classes. Initially the cemetery was located on several hills in the borough of Lychakiv, following the imperial Austro-Hungarian edict ordering that all cemeteries be moved outside of the city limits. The original project was prepared by Karol Bauer, the head of the Lviv University botanical garden. In mid-1850s the cemetery was expanded significantly by Tytus Tchórzewski, who created the present network of alleys and round-abouts. It then became the main city cemetery, and soon most other cemeteries were closed. The two largest that remained were the Yanivskiy Cemetery (in Polish Janowski, with many working class graves) and the adjacent New Jewish Cemetery. Lychakivskiy Cemetery was used by all Christian sects in the city: in addition to Roman Catholics, it also included Eastern Rite Catholics, Protestants and Orthodox. Cemetery of the Defenders of Lwów ... In 1925 the ashes of one of the unknown defenders of Lviv were transferred to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Warsaw. Since 1999 there is also a monument to the Sich Riflemen located just outside the mausoleum of Polish defenders of the city in 1918. After World War II the city was annexed by the Soviet Union to the ...
