Ukraine and Istanbul - Part 1 [15:04]
In July, 2011, Pat and I flew to Kiev, Ukraine, and boarded the Viking Lomonosov for a 12-day cruise on the Dnieper River to the Black Sea; then we flew to Istanbul, Turkey, for four days. In Part 1, we arrive in Kiev, and tour the city, passing by the rebuilt Great Gate of Kiev. We visit the lovely domed St. Sophia Cathedral, and the Monastery of Caves, an extensive complex of churches and museums founded by monks in 1051.

The pictures of the undeground monastery(12century) in Stradch,Страдч, (Lviv region, Ukraine) and the cave monastery(16century) in Krekhiv,Крехів (Lviv region). Now they are places of physical and spiritual healing. The monastery in Stradch was second after the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra monastery in Ukraine underground in Kievan Rus' (Kyivan) and Galicia-Volyn (Halytsko-Volyn)principality.It was stored at a high mountain on the left bank of the river near the village Vereschytsa. Mentioned in the Galicia-Volyn chronicle from 1242 as "Cave Domazhyrova". Archaeological research found that the monastery consisted of incoming gallery (length ca. 40 m), moves the total length of 270 m and a few cells, which are placed at a depth of approx. 20 m. At the top of the mountain there was a fortified hill-fort. The monastery ceased to exist approx. 14 cent. In our time preserved many legends about the monastery, the monks destroy the Mongol Tatars. The monastery in Krekhiv was established in the 16th century by two monks from the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, Joel and Silvester, who settled in nearby caves. Around 1612 or 1618 the owner of Zhovkva, Stanisław Żółkiewski offered the monks land to build their monastery, later surrounded with fortifications during the second half of the 17th century to defend it from roaming Tatar hordes. In the 18th century the monasteries prosperity rose and wooden buildings were replaced with stone ones which stand there today. At the beginning of the 19th century ...

Optina Pustyn Kloster (Auf Deutsch) [08:09]
Das Optina-Pustyn-Kloster, offiziell Svyato-Vvedenskaya Optinskaya Pustyn (Hl.-Optina-Einsiedelei zu Ehren der Mariä Einführung in den Tempel) ist ein Mönchskloster in der Nähe von Koselsk und war im 19. Jahrhundert das bedeutendste geistliche Zentrum der Russischen Orthodoxen Kirche. Das Kloster wurde berühmt für die von ihm ausgehende mönchische Erneuerungsbewegung in Russland, die auf der Hesychasmus Tradition beruhte, die im 18. Jahrhundert weitgehend in Vergessenheit geraten war. Geschichte Es ist nicht bekannt, wann die Einsiedelei gegründet wurde. Als Kloster besteht Optina mindestens seit dem 16. Jahrhundert. Es liegt etwa 130 km von Moskau entfernt. Im 18. Jahrhundert unter der antiklerikalen Politik von Peter I. und Katharina II. verfiel es zusehends. 1790 nahm der Metropolit Platon von Moskau den Wiederaufbau in Angriff. Im späten 18. Jahrhundert erlebte die Klosterkultur in Russland eine Wiederbelebung, die sich hauptsächlich den Werken und der spirituellen Ausstrahlung des Starzen und Schema-Mönchs Paisij (Welitschkowski) und seinen zahlreichen Schülern verdankte. In Optina fanden seine Werke ein neues „Hauptquartier", und von dort verbreitete sich seine Spiritualität in der hesychastischen Tradition über ganz Russland. Sichtbarer Ausdruck dieser Spiritualität in Optina ist die lange Reihe göttlich erleuchteter Väter bzw. Starzen, die vielen Menschen, die das Kloster im 19.
