Here is the view riding in the 3rd class (platzkart) car. I took the night train from Kyiv, Ukraine to Ivano-Frankivsk on 25 November 2011. I was in place 52, the last spot. All other places were full.

Bus Ride Ukrainian Carpathians [00:57]
This is a clip from my seven hour bus ride from Uzhorod, Ukraine to Ivano-Frankivsk. The ride was long and tedious. At times the bus was standing room only. At one station the driver had to turn away a half-dozen people who wanted to board. But the scenery on 29 October 2011 was pretty good. This was after we had passed over the ridgeline from Zakarpata and were decending into Striy.

This is a vignette or scene from the Museum theater production Pechy, Pechy, Khlib at the Ivan Honchar Museum in Kyiv, Ukraine. The show is about bread, which is a very emotional and political subject in Ukraine. The first two-thirds of the vignettes show bread as the center of a rich life in central Ukraine. The the Soviets come in 1932-33 and create the Holodomor, or Terror Famine, in which 3 to 5 million people died of hunger in the breadbasket of Europe.
