I am writing (pen-pal) to this young lady in the Ukraine for about 3 months now, and we decided to meet in Germany. I am from the US and I know my way around Munich, but is it possible for her to get a visa to go to Germany? I thought they (Germany) wouldn't allow young singles (she is divorced with a young daughter) from non-Western countries to obtain a visa.

Maybe Poland would be better for possible meeting
Hi Fairbro,
It would be easier and more practical to meet in Poland. Poland is a direct western neighbour of Ukraine. It is easier to get there on the part of Ukrainian citizens. |

I am worried about the language. I speak English and can get by in Deutsch. I know some Chinese, but so far, I have taken a few Russian classes, but it's worse than German and Chinese put together. She only speaks Russian and Ukranian. If i met her in Germany, we could get around with my German. If we met in Ukraine, we could get around with her Ukranian. I would like to avoid the visa hassle and meet her in Poland or Prague, but do you know if many people speak German, English or Russian in Poland?

English wave is rising quickly in Poland

Poland. Almost all young people learn it at school now! It is surely better than you imagine. I live in Warszawa and I assure you that you will feel at ease here with your English. Russian on the other hand is spoken, without much enthusiasm though, by the most of middle aged people. Poland really changed much for better last years. Ukrainian is even more similar to Polish than Russian. There are a lot of Ukrainians staying/working/trading here and they also could help. There are quite a lot of them in Warszawa. It is also not so bad with German here as a lot of Poles work in Germany and Austria. |

Ok, but Fairbro is waiting for help

Well, Kasper I still hope that you, with your abundant experience concerning travelling to/from Ukraine, do not reject the idea of helping our American friend. |

'A person who speaks three languages is called a "polyglot"... a person who speaks two languages is bilingual... and a person who speaks only one language is called an american' That's an old joke. I've heard it a long time ago, when I was in Germany. I speak three American languages - English, Pig Latin and Hip-hop. As far as meeting my pen-pal in Germany that I've only known for 3 (actually it's only 2) months), I'm wondering the same thing - how does a Ukranian lady have enough money to travel to Germany when she pleases? How does she obtain a visa? And why does she want me to come there so soon? I'm sure she's sincere, but then I also discovered an entire web site of ripoffs and scams by some of these beautiful Ukranian young ladies. My stepmother advised me one of her son's friends got arrested in Moscow, and for just asking a policeman a question (I don't know what he said, I told her he must have said something insulting). So I want to make sure I get a lot of answers 'cause I don't have enough money to make two trips. Ukranian girls are beautiful - the Beatles song "Back in the USSR" is right. If you want to find a fat, left-wing, feminist girl with a bad attitude, come to the US, they are all here. Ciao |
