You can take an overnight train.
The best is train#1(they go by numbers here) - first class ticket is $50-60 one way, it's a two person compartment. Second class, a four person compartment should be around $25 one way. Third class (no compartments) I wouldn't recommend trying unless you are travelling with the locals - the only way it can be fun. To bring the cost down you can try inquiring about various train numbers (=departure times), but expect lower service and dirtier trains the lower the price. The answer to your previous post is also train. Only I can't figure out why would you need to see a village across the border? If you come with a Moscow train how are you going to leave? Of course you can use commuter trains - they are cheap and run up to a certain village. Don't forget to make sure you have a Russian visa. If you have enough time the best is to get on a bus tour to a nearby monastery in Russia (like Optino Pustyn). The trip is max. 3 days, interesting, but not very comfy. |

Many thanks - SweetNovember
Hello SweetNovember
Thank you for your message. It is likely that I will be going to Kiev for a few months, and I suppose I am simply trying to build up a picture of my surroundings. For instance, I had forgotten about the Russian visa that you mention. Best wishes Spider |

You can get Russian visa in a few months. It's worth making a trip there. Exploring Ukraine can be cool too - try major cities like Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernivtsy, Kharkiv, Zaporozhie, Donetsk, Odessa. All can be reached by overnight train. Night on the train one way, night on the train another way. If you take first class (called "SV") it's comfy and you don't even need a hotel.
