Hello Everyone,
I am curious about the style of dress to make me look a little less like tourist. Do Ukrainian men wear shorts at all? When it's 30C+? I imagine dress shoes and socks? Nice dress shirt as well. Are sandals worn? How about swimsuits. The baggy style(like shorts) or the more speedo type(like pro swimmers use). Is the style different from the older generation to the younger generation? How would a 27 year old dress? Obviously I want to make a good impression, so I was going to dress up(dress shoes and socks, khakis and nice shirt) at first and then just take it from there, but I am looking at what I need to pack. Any insight is appreciated. Thanks |

a few words in Ukranian
Hello everyone,
As I will arrive next week in Odessa, I was hoping that someone may have a few greetings, and words to get me by. example: Hello, how are you? How much will that cost? You look so beautiful, the regular stuff that a traveller needs at certain times. |

funny
Um, Ukraine is perhaps the most relaxed European country I've ever visited. Kyiv makes most of Italy look like New York. In summer, Ukrainian guys wear sandals, shorts, jeans, t-shirts, hawaiian shirts, mesh-net transparent shirts, tennis shoes, sometimes even no shirts in Crimea. I've just returned from Ukraine...when I first got there, dressing 'to impress,' my friends all said, "Are you not hot? Go wear your comfortable clothes." Sure, going out for dinner or to a nicer night club might have the same general rules as, say, North America -- that is, wear something a bit more stylish and/or classy -- but Ukraine is far more chilled out than the strongly class-derived dress codes that you see in western Europe.
If you want to make a good impression, go for it, especially on your initial encounter with a new Ukrainian friend, but if you go overboard in the middle of summer, it will be quite obvious. |

oh yeah...
Swimsuits are most commonly of the speedo kind, but swim shorts are not uncommon and you'll even see baggy board shorts once in a rare while, and not just on Americans. Shorts are less common in the cities except on younger guys...more common than western europe, less common than in North America. Crimea...anything goes.
