Hello, I've just read your another message here.
I'm afarid you cannot communicate really easily with people in Crimea. I mean everywhere - in restorant, taxi, shop. Nobody can speak at least some little English. Don't ask of course about French. That's why I can do my work as an interpreter at the moment. I have 2 foreigners here in Kiev - 1 Englishman and 1 German that calling upon me from time to time. They are working in the companies and they do have secretaries to transalte for them. But after work they cannot (couldn't 1 year before) buy the simpliest things in the supermarket. Now they've learnt some words of course. But before they had really big problems. They called me to call for taxi for them and so on. Last summer I was assisting and guiding to Frenchman also. He was working in Kiev for 1 month. So you can imagine - normally they stayed at home as they couldn't go anywhere, they couldn't read and signs.
But it also depends what are you going to do. If just to lay on the beach - maybe you will manage to order something in restaurant with conversational book.
