Travel trips to VYZHNYTSIA
Hi everyone,
I am hoping to get some advice on travelling to Vyzhnytsia. My Mum and I want to come to Ukraine in the Spring to research some family history. My grandfather was from the town used to be known as Wiznitz which I believe is now Vyzhnytsia. Can anyone advice me on what is the nearest airport or major train station? Also has anyone tried to research their family history in this part of the world? Any stories, tips, advice would be hugely appreciated!! Many thanks Susie |

Vyzhnytsia is a very scenic area - with rivers, woods, rocks and caves.
You must come by air to Lviv and then travel by car to Vyzhnytsia - Chernivtsi region. Where do you live? Have you done any research on your family? Last edited by IreneLviv; 18th January 2011 at 23:14. |

thankyou
Hi Irene,
Thank you very much for your reply. Do you know if it;s possible to get the train from Lviv to Vyzhnytsia? We haven't done too much research yet, my mum only has a few details. We know her father let Vyzhnytsia with two of his sisters to come to England before the war, leaving a lot of family behind. They all died when my mum was quite young and so she wasn't able to uncover too much. We are hoping to get a translator and doing some looking around in records and registration offices?? All the best, Susie |

It is a very long journey by train!
Are you going to stop in Vyzhnytsia/Lviv? You will hardly be able to make any search in the registry office , unless you have with you a certified and translated inquiry - according to their new rules. I can help you oranise your trip - only you have to make preparations for it. Do you have any father's documents re his exact birth place? |

Welcome Susie. Happy New Year!
_______________________________ I am not clear that you have the exact place of origin. #1. Wiznitz is a German spelling for a number of places in Poland and Ukraine. (Irene, there is one in Lublin and another in Lemkivschyna)???? #2. Assuming it is Vyshnytsia in Chernivtsi, immigrants frequently referred to their district centers as place of origin for geographic reference, because their own villages were small. Was Grandfather from Vyshnytsia the district center town, or was he and his sisters from one of the 40+ villages in the Vyshnytsia district of Chernivtsi region > today Ukraine? #3. What religion did Grandfather practice? What was the ethnicity? #4. Appx when (before what war) did he immigrate? Where did he and his sisters settle upon immigration? #5. What have you been able to document so far? What was Grandfather's DOB (date of birth)? #5. Does Mother remember if the name Bukovyna, the region, ever being brought up? How about Romania?

Thank you both so much for your replies. My mum does have the name of my grandfather's birth town and she is going to dig it out today. He was jewish, Josef Rosner, and left via Vienna to settle in London before the outbreak of WWII. Hopefully I will be able to post more detailed information once my mum has found it. We always thought that he was from Romania, but another relative over Christmas said that Wiznitz was now part of the Ukraine!! I see it is much more complex than we first imagined. Thanks again for your comments, it really is kind of you both to take the time to help.
Many thanks, Susie |
