Monuments & Memorial Sites
Hi everyone,
I'm planning a trip to the western Ukraine in the next 3 years, and am particularly interested in visiting monuments, memorials, museums or historical points of interest regarding the Galizien Division and the UPA. Sadly I can't read Ukrainian, and there's not much information on these places on english websites. So far I plan to visit the Lychakiv Cemetery and stepan bandera monument in Lviv, but there's likely a wealth of places I've yet to find out about and I hope to find a little help on this forum Thanks in advance! *edit: Places or regions I plan to visit during this trip are: Lviv, Ternopil, Brody and the Carpathians Last edited by Alkonost; 21st May 2010 at 17:27. Hi Alkonost,
Here in Ivano-Frankivsk, which is the gateway to Carpathian mountains, Ukraine, we have the Liberation Fights Museum, Stepan Bandera monument and Patriots' Centre. The Museum of Liberation Movement in Precarpathia — Museum Circle of Prykarpattja There is a special restaurant Bunker that tells you about UPA in Ivano-Frankivsk. Similar place, called Kryivka they have in Lviv. Staryi Uhryniv village where Stepan Bandera was born is close to Ivano-Frankivsk. Historical and Memorial Museum of Stepan Bandera — Museum Circle of Prykarpattja In Tyshkivtsi village, family place of UPA commander General R.Shukhevych, near Horodenka there is Roman Shukhevych museum. Museum of history of Tyshkivtsi village and Liberation competitions named after Roman Shukhevych — Museum Circle of Prykarpattja More about museums in Ivano-Frankivsk area you can check on website: museums.if.ua I can help you with traveling to and around Ivano-Frankivsk and Carpathians, as well as any other things a traveler might need. Should you have any further questions, feel free to ask. Best regards, Yurko_uk |

Thank you Irene and Yurko! The links and information has helped me so much. And thanks for the link to the pictures and articles of Hero's day
I'm debating which dates might be best for travel and seeing cultural events, with luck I'll be able to plan the vacation around that date, But there's also the Vorokhta mushroom festival in early fall. Normally there would be no contest and I'd opt for may- only I really love mushrooms (my spouse thinks I'm nuts, but his family never cooked with mushrooms so he doesn't appreciate them.) Ivano-Frankivsk is a city I would love to visit. There's so many places I'd love to see, I'm wondering if 2 weeks would be enough time to see it all. What are your favorite places in these cities that tourist too often miss? Are there any tourist traps to be aware of? (in Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, carpathians, and the spa resorts in Truskavets, etc) Thanks!

Re tourist trips - they cover only the central part of Lviv -whereas I love to ramble through the outskirs. More than a half of all Ukraine's landmarks is concentrated in Lviv - 10 days will not be enough to see them all. You must chose your itinterary depending on your particular interests. Once, I accompanied an architect interested in churches - we spent a week only trying to visit all of them. There are also many places to see around Lviv - eg castles - one of them was used as a model by Russian tzar to build the famous palace in St Petersburg

![]() Ivano-Frankivsk is a kind of relaxed city, not crowded with tourists like Prague for example. It's a nice place to visit and later you can go to Ukrainian Carpathians. There are many smaller and bigger towns like Yaremche, Tatariv, Vorokhta, Verkhovyna, Yablunytsya up there. The highest Ukrainian Carpathian ranges are in Ivano-Frankivsk region along with the highest mountain in Ukraine, mt.Hoverla. So Ivano-Frankivsk region might be similar to Scottish Highlands. I'm not aware of any sorts of tourist traps here. In general local people in West Ukraine are very polite. Greetings from Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine Yurko_uk |
