The food is like everywhere else, exactly the same , but different.
I'm not a picky eater, I figure that if somones taken the time to prepare this food then I'm going to take the time to eat it. However, there are a couple of local specialitys that have turned me off. Salo. It's raw bacon without the meat. Eaten raw.. I'm not a shushi eater either and they have some smoked/raw fish dishes that I couldn't handle. But everything else has been great. Everything was well prepared but it's different than here. In the central region of the country they don't use alot for hot spices so if you like tobasco, bring your own! If all else fails there are MicheyD's around. But the burgers and such taste different too. They have pizza but it's got different sauces and toppings. No thick crust either. ![]() Have you gotten that phrase book from lonelyplanet.com yet? You will really like it. |

Cool, yeah the food is the only thing that worries me a little... Anyways! I will eat but I am very cautious eater and well if I don't like something I just don't eat. I am a soldier in the army so I can go without food if need be lol... Anyways, no I did not get the phrase book but I have Rosetta Stone thru the Army and I have the same program that the CIA and FBI use to learn a different language too... So, I am picking it up pretty well!

I thought the saying was that "an army travels on it's stomache." Go without food??
![]() Even with the armys rosetta stone you'll want this bookI(I'm working on it too, but I had to pay $500 for my program). It's only a few bucks and you'll se just how good it's set up. Tell you what, IF you buy it and don't use it while in Ukraine I'll buy it back from you after you get back IF you can look me in the eye and say it's not worth it! No Schitt! |

Everyone that has tried this has raved about how nicely it's set up. Get the Russian version not the Ukrainian one if you're going to be in the central area of the country. In western Ukraine they speak Ukrainian more even though it's the official language everywhere. Old habits die hard.

Hi everyone!
I'm Kieven and personally i suggest to visit the next places: 1) Kiev-Pechersk Lavra (11century) 2) St. Sophia Cathedral (11century) 3) Andrew's Descent- one of the oldest descent in kiev 4) Baby Yar (Babi Yar is a ravine in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. In the course of two days, September 29—30, 1941, a special team of German SS troops supported by other German units, local collaborators and Ukrainian police murdered 33,771 Jewish civilians. The Babi Yar massacre is considered to be "the largest single massacre in the history of the Holocaust".) 5) Two years ago in Kiev was opened a monument "Candle of Memmory" dedicated to victims of Golodomor (Golodomor - refers to the famine of 1932-1933 in the Ukranian SSR during which millions of people were starved to death due to Soviet policies). And underneath this monument a museun of Golodomor is situated, so its really interesting!! SO, this is my personal 5 favorite places one should visit being in kiev! Don't hesitate to ask more about Kiev and it's history, i will answer with a pleasure! Regards, Ira |
