What is is about modern society that makes people want to idolise chosen individuals so much. Teenage girls have always worshipped their favourite singers or filmstars, but over the years this cult following has been extended to males.
From their youth they have fixed pictures of their favourite footballer to bedroom walls, and as they became older are now paying huge ticket prices to go and see their favourite team play. They spend disproportionate sums or money (that must be detrimental to their wives and childrens welfare) on overpriced football shirts (bearing their worshipped players name) and other atire, or on flights and accommodation to attend international matches.
Many years ago football was being played purely for sport and the players earned not much more than an ordinary wage. Today football and many other sports (formula1) have become huge business enterprises often being owned/ run by all manner of dubious characters, who may have an interest in their chosen sport, but are also there to make the big money.
Unfortunately, modern living seems to be creating this "celbrity culture" and escapism that drives people into parting with their money in the process of "sport voyerism" rather than the healthier exercise of actual sport participation.
This mass "sport" activity is a nice little earner for the few at the expense of those who need to review their lives and consider ways of improving their own and their families well being.
If only they took as much interest in their childrens social upbringing, diet and the political environment that governs their lives they might find a better future awaiting for their children.
