Pete, I have friends in the south-eastern city of CHERNIVTSI (about 65K people) and have been visiting them regularly over a period of 14 years. In that time the number of Baptist churches (which I quote simply because that's where my friends go) has risen from 4, to 9. This counts in some new churches in villages where walking is too far to the city - and so local churches have been planted.
One in question was in a village populated mainly by Rumanian speaking peoples (the BUKOVINA area belonging to Rumania up to the 2nd world war) and our church in Marlow here had the lovely opportunity of financing the last 10% to completion of a super church building and my Pastor and I were able to attend the opening service of dedication in August of 2004.
Some of my friends have direct current contact with Kiev churches and if you wanted some info, then pls say. I would make just one comment, to cover a massive situation...... it has been my experience that none of the churches will work with - or show love for - another denomination...... even those preaching 'the same Gospel', but having said that - I live for the yearly opportunity I have to visit my friends - and their Baptist churches in Chernisvtsi.
best to you
Andrew
