English Saxon Title of God Roman French
Monday Mona The Moon Moon Lundi
Tuesday Tiu God of War Mars Mardi
Wednesday Woden The Cunning God Mercury Mecredi
Thursday Thor Thunder God Jove Jeudi
Friday Freyja Goddess of Love Venus Vendredi
Saturday --- God of Time Saturn Samedi
Sunday Sunne The Sun Sun Dima

These, as well as the gods after which the months are named, is the Christian's way of honoring the pagan ways. They would have it noother way, apparently. For they have had ample opprotunity to change the indentities for centuries.

Month Names

Month Names

Where do the month names come from?

Name Comes from Who or what? Why?
January Janus God of Doors This month opens the year.
February februo purify This was a Roman month of sacrifices and purification.
March Mars God of War Start of year for soldiers (no fighting during winter)
April aperire open This is the month when trees open their leaves.
May Maia Goddess of Growth This is the month when plants really start to grow.
June Juno Queen of the Gods
July Julius Caesar Emperor of Rome He reorganised the calendar.
August Augustus Emperor of Rome He thought he was at least as important as Julius Caesar!
September septem seven Seventh month (counting from March)
October octo eight Eighth month (counting from March)
November novem nine Ninth month (counting from March)
December decem ten Tenth month (counting from March)

When you look at September, October, November and December, it seems as if the Romans couldn't count! But their year used to start in March. When Julius Caesar reorganised the calendar and made it start in January, he kept the old names, apart from one month, which he called after himself.

The Romans had the same months as us. They had special names for the first day in the month (the Kalends), the seventh day (the Nones) and the fifteenth (the Ides). The Kalends belonged to Juno. The Ides belonged to Jupiter.

HELLO, MY OLD FRIEND..................

yehhhhhh! Very interesting - informative, although I learnt it at school and my only comment would be "NOT the 'christians way of honouring pagan ways". What I call Tuesday (for instance) is irrelevant, as long as that day comes between two others - both of which I and other's recognise by name !!

I hear that the self-prolaimed leader of a Country close to Azherbizhan (sp?) has declared a 40-day month and named almost everything after his dead mother. Now THAT's whacky, not using some centuries-old names for our calender. Frankly - as a christian - I could not care less what tomorrow is called - God knows my heart and He knows that there is no blasphemy there on this account.

Finis.

SORRY ANGEL -

Which one did you have in mind - christianity, paganism, or something else??

The opening thread was from 'an old friend' who has been raised from the 'former member' state and is - as you can see - years out of date, but reincarnated by the 'brain' - and always good for a.... laugh!
