Hi, sure I can provide you with what I can about Ukraine. But why is it you all have problem with saying Ukraine, without "THE". Do you say "The USA" ?
www.uazone.net can provide you with currency information, and A lot of other information. |

There ain't No the in Ukraine:-Grammatically, the definate article is used only with the name of states when genitive is either present (e.g. the United States of America) or implied (e.g. the Czech Republic). It is also politically offensive as it has historically been used to connote the idea that Ukraine is merely an area of territory rather than a separate nation and/or state
Hope This Helps |

Interesting start to a discussion. I too am interested in learning about Ukraine from the people who live there. Ever since i was a small boy I have been fascinated by the culture and history of the place. I would like to know if anyone has any information on the Ukrainian tradition of cross-stitch, and how the beautifully designed towels are used in marriage ceremonies...

Hi Cossack,
When my friends got married at the central registry office in Kyiv (Bermuda triangle for those in the know) I was the best man. (contradiction in term though that may be). I had to take an embroidered wedding towel, a bottle of champagne and the rings into the office. The rings and the champagne I gave to the registrar and at the correct moment I handed one end of the towel to the brides maid we then put it on the floor. The bride and groom stepped on the towel at the same time and recited some of their vows. The towel was later used to hold the bread and salt we ate as we crossed the thresh hold of the reception. My friends still have the towel in a display case in their home. HTH. Vlas |

Ladies and Gentlemen:
I, too, get frustrated with "the" Ukraine. I merely reply to those people by saying... "Oh, and have you always lived in "the" America? Have you ever visited "the" England? Or have you always lived in "the" Canada?" Eventually they catch on... I teach English at the high school and collegiate level and it's one of my pet peeves. (Can't stand seeing the words "a lot" written as one word either...) |
