Good points
Yes, you make good points Voyager, there are problems with journalism in the west, correct, but often we forget that in other parts of the world, like Moldova, for example, your average reporter is so suppressed he or she could face jail for stepping out of line, or for breaking laws which force them to tow a very crude governmental line. I still worry over the idea and concept of balance in the press, though.
I also take your point that had Yanukovich won, the west would have accepted him. However, the Kremlin would have warmly embraced him and there is a difference. And, it is true, and certainly if you read between the lines - some of it questionable - that an attempt was made to demonise Yanukovich in a very subtle and cunning fashion.
You are also correct that for the Ukraine it is now a tense time as Yanukovich seeks to challenge the vote. Rest assured people will be talked to and plans will be afoot to discredit, if not the election, then certainly our friend Yushchenko. All we can do now is watch the machinations of the Ukraine powerbrokers unfold, the democratic election is over there is now a propaganda war to be won, isn't that how it works?
