KIEV (AFP) - A Ukrainian soldier was killed and two others injured in an ambush in southeastern Iraq (news - web sites), the Ukrainian defense ministry revealed.

The incident occurred near the village of Zubadia, some 180 kilometers (110 miles) southeast of Baghdad, when three Ukrainian armored personnel carriers came under fire.

Two US military helicopters provided cover for Ukrainians to evacuate their men after the attack. A third US chopper transported the injured troops toward Baghdad, where they were reported to be in stable condition.

It was the second Ukrainian soldier killed in Iraq this month, with the former Soviet republic vowing after the first death on April 6 to keep its 1,600 troops in the country despite decisions by other nations in the US-led coalition to pull out their forces.

The former Soviet republic has the fifth largest detachment in the multinational force in Iraq and is serving in a Polish-commanded sector which is patrolling a large swathe of south-central Iraq.

The group serves in the same region from which Spain has decided to withdraw its 1,400 troops following the terror strikes in Madrid and the subsequent election of the Socialist party, who opposed the war in Iraq.

May not mean anything in your book, or in our Maker's eyes, but from one American, and millions of freedom loving souls, both lving and dead...

Our heartfelt thanks to the Ukrainian Army, and deepest condolences to the families, friends, and brothers-in-uniform of our fallen peacekeepers.

When the sunlight of freedom, peace and tranquility again brightens the ancient land of Iraq as it has in the past, the world and the Iraqui people, will not have forgotten them.
