What the hell is going on! We are trying to become an EU member, but somebody is working against us. We are working hard and bilateral ties in economy and trade show a good development. Our government got new foreign investments, which shows that Ukraine is attractive for investors. And at the very moment some European states start saying we don’t deserve to be in EU. Why? I don’t understand. The cooperation with European companies is developing. We are ready to comply with all the demands and conditions. Our soldiers were sent to Kosovo and Iraq. What else do they want? Europe is humbling us and our country. We do everything what you ask. One says that we will be in EU by 2030 only! It’s unjust! What else must we to do to entering EU?

To believe that Ukraine will be in the EU when it breaks its ties with Russia is too simple.
Politics is driven by money, lots and lots of money. When Ukraine sorts out its banking systems and the legal enforcement of investment protection, and property law including contract compliance enforcement, then and only then will it be allowed entry into the european community. I understand your frustration with all the demands coming from member of the union but bear in mind that each of these demands in turn, make it better for the Ukraine citizen wether they join the EU or not. Ties with Russia or the CIS have little bearing on the outcome one way or another. The law, the courts, and corruption, including the police is where the answer lies. Len |

To add to Lenire's "The law, the courts, and corruption, including the police is where the answer lies."
A cosmetic improvement is all that is needed regarding the above. The UK Police and justice system is a third world joke, the EU has a level of corruption that would make Kutchma blush, while in France the restrictions on freedom of speech would shock Putin. |

Wider Europe
Romano Prodi stated that 'Wider Europe' will be available to "all EU neighbours who, despite their proximity to the Union, do not meet the bloc's political and economic criteria for entry"....so instead of EU membership, nations such as Russia and Ukraine are being told that they can progressively secure some benefits of EU membership without joining.
The EU is resource poor relative to Russia so expect them to attempt to secure oil and gas supplies. In addition, Europe is aging and will need young workers. I also think it would also be no surprise to see the EU use the carrot and stick approach to create an incentive for countries in the "near abroad" to model themselves in the EU ideal. |
