Norse_Slav, referring to your statement I can say that commmunist rulers cared about intergrity of their power in the first place. If it accidentially coincided with their political goals, farmers could get impression of being flattered (from time to time).
Rule of the jungle... is not likely to take roots in my country after so many years of communism. As to survival of the fittest... in fact Poland still has lots too many farmers (ca. 25 -30% of all population) and many of their will have to change their profession. They will surely not die of hunger.
Currently, Polish farmers forgot their recent noisy protests and started to calculate possible gains resulting from the unification process. Even with only 25% of subsidies level their Western colleagues enjoy, this help is real and meaningful. I can only wish Ukrainian farmers to get comparable level of sponsorship!
The last issue - the act of unification will be initiated on MAY 1 and it will be directly preceded by the European Summit being held in Warsaw. My city resembles a besieged fortress. Plenty of businesses will plainly be shut down for a few upcoming days beacuse of anti-globalist or terrorist threat.
