To what extend is the press in Ukraine currently independent? And for reference, how does the current situation compare to a few years ago? Any parallels with Russia?

By independent i mean void of direct influence from politics and / or "business" olicharchs.

Any input is appreciated, thanks.

I was hoping that some of the Ukrainians would answer your question. I know that the media in Russia is way ahead of the UK and US, but I,m also curious as to whether Mr Kutchma has any hold over Ukraine's press.
I should point out for starters that the UK has not produced an equal of Mr Gongadze, or Ukrainskaya Pravda.

Hi HG, i missed your reply initially. But you hit the nail on the head - still hoping for a response from (one of) the Ukrainians. Is Vanya still around?
