You're very prolific writer and bring some of the facts together but fail to appreciate how economies do really work
Though there may be strong case for economic union this does not necessarily mean that a political union should follow at all if any. Ukraine GDP though as small as Belgium doesn't mean that Belgium is by economic definitions as small country as you quote. In fact is a powerful country whose influence is growing as the centre of Europe. Then again, Why should Ukraine should commit suicide by joining Russia when Russia's economy is not doing much better than Ukraine's? To remain centralised like Russia's economy?
To leave the regions in charge of thugs like Prymorie?
To have a thriving black market economy managed by the maffia?
Surely Ukraine has many problems it does not mean the independence should be surrendered for the sake of nothing more than an ill conceived union with no specific objectives nor economic directions.
If Russia wants Ukraine's goods and services it should be very welcomed to PAY for it but not necessarily and excessive price but one set by international prices something Russia did not do in the past.
As far as exchange of resources goes I believe this is already taking place between the two countries in either formal or informal economy
One of the problems facing Ukraine is that it has not entirely shaken off it's post communist apparatus stiffling every sector of it's economy so such argument that linguistically and ethnically we are the closest to Russians or viceversa would not hold water is this enough to justfy a union? I don't think so!
Public opinion is a different matter in fact it can be turned around all toghether by economic growth polls can change in a matter of days

I don't want Ukraine to get back with Russia and I don't like the communist flag, but I'm not mortally offended by it.

You keep on leaving similar short incoherent comments under many messages that have to do with racism, would you like to leave a whole sentence this time?

Ukraine should stay as it is, once they get rid of this old guard; who were bought up in the Brezhnev era things will start to change. Have you got a short memory, right up to the mid sixties Moscow was deporting Ukranian inteligentsia to the gulags why do you think such monkeys as Kutchma are in charge all the brains were killed off

You may notice that my id is Ivans_grandson. I choose this becuase I have never been to Ukraine and the last memeber of my family to live there was Ivan, my grandfather (I promiss this has a point).

The reason that my gradfather was the last member of my family to live there is a byproduct of the last union between Russia and Ukraine. My family was throuhgn out because they dared to renounce communism and submission to the Russians. My grandfathers brother was taken by the KGB and never seen again. Feering for his life my grandfather fleed Ukraine and died long before teh gov't cleared our family to visit Ukraine.

Now in a time when the KGB has been elected as president of Russia, Ukrainins are falling over themselves to get in line and submit to Russia. Do you not remeber the past? I can understand that times are not well, but does that mean you should scrape independace? Establish normal trade relations, yes. But can you honestly say it is better to flourish as a parasite than sturggle as a free man?

Ivans_grandson, you've been grossly misinformed!
It's hard to imagine Ukraine scrapping independance. There'll be a civil war here if anyone even attempts to initiate this
