Hey folks! I am starting a non-profit org to assist orphanages in the Ukraine, and would like any information that anyone could pass along. Anything like locations? Staffing? Names? Contacts? Numbers of children living there? Level of support? Ect. Any info would be extreamly helpful. I will be traveling to Sevastopol and Kiev next June, 2002 to see things for myself (and to meet a young woman name katya). But it would be of tremendous help if I had as much info as possible before hand. Thanx.

your quest is most laudable, and i am sorry i can't be of much particular help. you ought to address this question again under 'open board' and call out for Hannia, and Andrewblow. Hannia is a wizard at ferreting out just such information on all sorts of topics, as your question under 'Politics' regarding orphanages is rather inappropriate. Andrew visits Ukraine regularly on social work and he also should be able to help with particular information. So 'Open Board' adressing yourself to Hannia and Andrewblow and see what happens !
let all of us know how you are going and good luck

Go to 'literature and film' and open thread 'What is your favourite film' see entry from 'JetSet' where he gives a report from a kiev newspaper on an orphange which gave a show on stage. He also gives a website address, and some information about orphanges in ukraine, and where the Dutch embassy in Ukraine had an imput good luck...johncullen

Hannia is on a distinguished road
I have been partial in my support of this org working with street children in Kiev.

Given the economic circumstance of the country, just about every big city is faced with this same problem.

Have you been in touch with the people at the Peace Corps/Ukraine or Unicef? They might be able to provide you with a list of orphanages w/the greatest needs. The Peace Corps might also help you w/volunteers.
