Misio-
"Such a union would protect Slav culture from western expansion (EU etc.) and imperialism." In a dying attempt to ressurect a nostalgic wet dream of 19th Century Slavophilism, I have to object to such a thought. First of all, if fearing 'western expansion' means fearing Lithuania or Ukraine becoming German, look at the Jews; do they fear western/eastern culture destroying their culture? They have a 'Western' state yet their culture remains intact. Closing oneself to Western Europe out of fear of Western Europe is childish. This is almost next in the list of blaming the West for a country's problems. I don't like Poles blaming the Russians, or the Germans, or the Americans, for whatever is wrong with their country. It's Poles who live in Poland, not Germans, Russians, or Americans, so stop whining. Whatever is wrong with Poland is what's wrong with the Poles. This goes for everyone in every other country in the world. There may be exceptions to the rule, but once you get into that, then everyone is an exception to the rule and you're back at square one.If a government wants people to retain their loyalty to their country, it will do everything possible to allow for an environment where poeple can have jobs and make money. This will keep them from having to immigrate in order to seek a prosperous/happy life as offered by the state. A prosperous/happy life offered by the state only pertains to a life where you don't have to work the street to support your existence. Anything else is not the responsibility of the goverment and shouldn't be because it really can't... After all, how is a government to help you solve family problems? It can't, but it can help you solve financial problems. More importantly, satisfying jobs and income will keep people from loosing faith in their own state; that it can effectively support them. I'm glad that Poland will be modelling itself on Germany because the degenerate state in which it currently exists does not yield any chances for modern and effective ideas coming from its own people. Maybe I take that back, there are many good ideas, but I haven't seen anyone actualy vote for them. In fact, people seem to vote for those parties that like to promise the most and blame other parties for the troubles. You'd think they do that in every country, but in Poland it's especially stupefying when you realize that the party in charge is always a joke. Like you can't vote for a worse party. Given all these choices, their vote always ends up going to someone who screws up big time when in office. As an example that a country's state of affairs is closely related to populace morale... Back in the 20'ties the Poles were focused on one thing; to make the best of knowing that the are independant again. Poland stagnated in the 30'ties because the fear of loosing statehood returned with the onset of Stalin and Hitler. The thought took precedent over all other problems and soon brought a catastrophic sense of existence for many people. Then Pilsudski died. That was the end. Read Milosz on this. Someone said something about Eastern Europe looking up to Russia? I know that Russia looks kindly on Poland/Poles. Very flattering actualy what they say when they think of Poland. Sooo, Russians, in some sense, think of Poles as people with many good qualities. (Or so they think, hehe). Not in this post, but someone said Kosciuszko was Byelorussian? Ok, very far back his family's name was Kostiushko, but after a few centuries it became Kosciuszko and he probably regarded himself as Polish. Sort of like saying a person born in New Orleans is actualy French. TuhajBej- Are you the one who posted in a thread by Beata (this is long ago) who asked what Ukr/Rus think of Poland/Poles? If so, then you are my hero! Hehe. Krzysztof |
