Question

Hello,

How are you? I really need your help. I want to send six books of a language course (they include three CDs also as part of the course) to a recipient in the city of Vinnitsa (Ukraine) and I want to know if books are taxed in Ukraine because I don't want the recipient to pay any taxes and go directly to her house because they are a gift, this way I can know what to do in advance before sending the books (I am going to send them by means of the Peruvian national post service). As far as I know in many countries books are excempted of taxes, I would like to know if it's the same in Ukraine for a small queantity of books (6 books). This books are not going to be sold, they are a gift for personal use.

*** I am really worried because last year I had a problem sending a parcel to the same city (Vinnitsa) from Peru with DHL service. I declared it was a gift and I valued the parcel in $50 (which was the price in the Peruvian store) and I sent it during the last days of December 2005 as a Christmas gift and there were two problems. Firstly, the parcel was delivered after 15 days, and worst of all, they (in Ukraine) said the recipient that she had to pay a $50 tax to free the parcel for delivery. Well, she finally paid the tax but as it was intended to be a gift you can understand that it wasn't my intention that she pays anything. (I think they told her there were more than one tax included in the $50 like translation and I don't know what else). I would like to know why the tax was so high if the parcel (a scarf) was for personal use (the tax was as high as the parcel price).

Can someone help me with the information about sending books to Ukraine and if there are taxes what do I have to do so my recipient doesn't pay them? Do I have to value the parcel or just say it is a gift? Maybe dividing the six books in two parts so the number is smaller when I send them?.

Help me please with my questions about sending the books to Ukraine.

Thank you very much in advance for your great help,

César

yes my friend I had the very same problem sending clothing as a gift to my in laws. I used Fedex and they did not mention anything about paying duty. Next time I will carry them through in a suitcase on my annual visit

This might be late info. I always send things as "used" and have never had a problem. And believe me... I have sent everything from electric toothbrushes to computer flat panel monitors. Digital cameras too. Send the box and booklet separate. Put finger prints all over everything. With the new Pres. things seem to be more relaxed. Also declare a low... less than 100$ value.
