That's a good point.I regularly email and mail my friend in Odessa and she gets about 20-30% of the letters I send. I don't know if it is just luck but when I have sent some magazines and books by post in a larger parcel (but not looking lkie it contains anything of value)it has always arrived..but the standard airmail letter really seems to be a lottery at times.

Rick- sounds a little similar

Rick, your problem sounds similar to the one I had with the girl I met. It started with small gifts for her when I arrived, then they had to become bigger and bigger- then for her family and son. Her son was pretty ill- so I sent her money on my return, for his care. I hope you can nip this in the bud and that this is just a 'difference of understanding'. When she came here to visit- she was even worse and just wanted to go up and down Oxford Street with me buying increasingly expensive presents for her and her family. In the end I had enough of it- no thanks or anything, it completely ruined everything. I have since learnt from a friend who teaches English at a University in Ukraine that she has students who do exactly this- not out-and-out scammers, but people who want lots of presents and a few holidays and no real intention of leaving Ukraine because they do this almost as a living. I hope this doesn't happen in your case and that it is something you can settle at the beginning.

I'm not too worried. I understand their excitement over having food in the refrigerator and clean pairs of socks. My gal was feeding her two prize boxers fish heads when I visited the first time. I have started springing for real dog food. She has not really asked for too much, but buying with hryvnas there makes you think you are spending a fortune, when it turns out to be just a fifth of a fortune.

Probably shouldn't have let the son watch me withdraw 1000 hryvnas a crack 3 days in a row first time there. Kid still suffers from torn muscles in his face his eyes got so wide.

I've told Sveta she will have to make 200 dollars last from 2-15 til 3-15. I expect a call before then asking for money. She will be a challenge but not a difficult one.

Letter to Ukraine

Hey all,

When I mentioned pen and paper being a useful medium, I speak from the experience of it generally going quite well. From Europe a letter to places like Kyiv and Chernigov, and even some small out of the way town, takes on average 10 working days for delivery. Even packages take about the same length of time for delivery without anything going missing. The next thing is the success rate of receipt and delivery... Well, personal experience has it that about 97% of all mail and packages sent reached the destination. About 99% of all mail has been received. It has often taken less than 1 week to receive. Perhaps this is an exception, but this is my experience over a rather long period. Just about all sent and received items are accounted for. It is cheaper than an Internet Cafe, a lot more personal, and an absolute treat to find that letter from your lady lying in your postbox after a long, tiring day at the office. Perhaps you are not on such a personal level with your friend, or perhaps you are. Admit it, a handwritten letter beats a message in your email box hands down!!! It does not matter if it takes longer to reach its destination.
