Promise rings - are they part of Ukrainian dating customs? (Urgent).
Hello, I urgently seek to know if Ukrainian dating culture includes the custom of
giving Promise rings? (a ring given by a gentleman to his lady as a symbol of commitment leading to future engagement & eventual marriage, in other words, a pre-engagement ring (as described at answers.com)). Any help with this would be much appreciated. |

Ah, so I doubt it. I was never in Ukraine, but I have never seen it in Poland. Of course it is normal to buy a ring or other jewelry for a girl/woman but this has no "official" meaning. I think this is not common in Ukraine neither.

Promise rings date back to 16th century. They were also known as chastity rings or abstinence rings. ---------------------------------------------- These rings originated in the United States in the 1990s when a huge movement of abstinence of sex until marriage mostly by Christian groups. These rings are bought, sold to, given to adolescents or to parents (to give to their children) to represent a 'promise to oneself' of the above desire. In some churches, purity-promise rings are accompanied with a religious vow with implication that the wearer will remain abstinent until replaced with a wedding ring.
