Ukraine logos profit leader's son
Moscow
August 4, 2005

The symbols of Ukraine's orange revolution last year have been registered as profitable trademarks in the name of the oldest son of the revolution's leader, Viktor Yushchenko.

Crowds protesting against last November's fraudulent presidential elections were decorated with opposition logos, including the Tak! logo (Yes! in Ukrainian) and a downward-facing horseshoe. The logos were predominantly on orange backgrounds — the colour of the opposition.

Mykola Katerinchuk, a former legal adviser to the Yushchenko campaign and now a senior tax official, said he had transferred the copyright to Andriy Yushchenko, the President's 19-year-old son, after the third and final round of elections in December. Questions are now being asked as to how much money the logos have generated for the Yushchenko family.

Andriy has recently been the focus of media scrutiny because of his lavish lifestyle. The student claims he has a consultancy job that enables him to rent a BMW from a friend, afford a personal bodyguard, pay restaurant bills with large rolls of cash, and carry a platinum mobile phone worth up to $A46,000.

The Ukrainskaya Pravda newspaper, which first reported Andriy's lavish lifestyle, carried news of the logos' ownership under the headline "The privatisation of revolution by Yushchenko's son?"

The claim may foment dissatisfaction with the fledgling administration, which critics accuse of repeating the nepotism and corruption of its ousted predecessors.

He must be one helluva a consultant to rake in that much money.

Penthouse of the son of President of Ukraine costs $750,000
The scandal connected with money which is spent by son of President of Ukraine goes on.

All Ukrainians got to know that the car of Yushchenko-junior costs €130,000. Now they have got a new surprise, this is the cost of their President son's penthouse. The penthouse (150 square meters), the fifth floor in the elite district of the down-town, costs $750,000.

We remind that President of Ukraine is the active fighter with corruption and traces everyone who spends more than officially earns.

President of Ukraine states that his son earns money by himself and may spend it how he wants. "Any accusations of ordered articles and information are an evidence of immaturity of our power. I do not care what car belongs to the son of President of Ukraine, but I do not believe that 19 years old boy can get such money working in consulting firm (as President stated – edit.). And this car may be a bribe to son in order to get influence on the father," states Alyona Pritula, the editor of sensational Ukrainskaya Pravda which published the information about the expenses of the son of orange revolutionary and which correspondent who was called "hireling killer" by President of Ukraine for his attempt to ask President to give the explanations about his son’s source of living. According to her, Ukrainskaya Pravda is not going to give up the investigation.

President of Ukraine stated that the car is loaned and the son pays for it. But neither President nor his son could explain using the car with foreign license plate which is violation of Ukrainian laws.

KIEV, Ukraine --Ukrainian media are testing the boundaries of their newly won freedoms with hard-hitting exposes on the allegedly extravagant lifestyle of President Viktor Yushchenko's son, sparking a feud with the president over what is fair game in this former Soviet republic.

Yushchenko claims the press went too far in attacking his teenage son, while journalists are now questioning the president's commitment to freedom of the press.

"This is a test of what kind of relationship we are going to have in Ukraine between the government and the press, and it is difficult to say how it is going to develop," said Dmytro Krikun, development director at Internews, a nonprofit group that aids the formation of a free press.

The muckraking Web site Ukrainskaya Pravda last week ran stories alleging Yushchenko's 19-year-old son, Andriy, drives a $160,000 BMW and frequently slaps down rolls of $100 bills at trendy restaurants.

Amid the controversy, the Interior Ministry said Thursday that police have ordered Yushchenko's son to pay a $3.36 fine for illegally driving the BMW, which is registered to another person. The fine was personally levied by Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko in a television broadcast late Wednesday.

The reports about Andriy's lavish spending were picked up by newspapers and have riveted readers in the impoverished nation, where the average monthly salary is $152.

Asked about them at a news conference this week, Yushchenko lashed out at the Web site's reporter, calling him a "hit-man" and saying that he had advised his son to "find that restaurant check ... shove this check under that journalist's snout and then sue."

Some 200 journalists responded by signing an open letter, reminding Yushchenko that he had vowed not only to end the intimidation and pressure that had plagued them during the previous decade under Leonid Kuchma, but also that he -- and his family -- would be accountable for their actions. They accused him of "showing disdain for free speech."

"The president's words show that the president himself misunderstands free speech in general," said Ihor Kulia, an independent media expert. "The president has no right to offend a journalist and point out to the journalist what to write about and what not to write about."

Yushchenko sent a letter to the Web site, insisting that he highly values free speech.

"It is very good that we live in a country where there are no taboo themes and persons," wrote Yushchenko, who won a court-ordered presidential repeat vote last year after mass protests over fraud dubbed the "Orange Revolution." He took office in January on a reformist, pro-Western platform.

"It is correct that the president's family lives under big media attention, but that isn't cause to remove his natural right to a private life," he said.

He also said at the news conference that his son, a university student, works at an unspecified consulting firm and earns enough to be able to rent such a costly car.

Andriy, who could not be reached for comment by The Associated Press, told a Ukrainian newspaper, Ukraina Moloda, that his father gave him a "tough talking to ... probably the most difficult conversation of my life." He added that he felt responsible for his father's outburst at the news conference.

"To be honest, if I'd know that such attention would be focused on me, I would have given less occasion for discussion ... behaved myself differently," he said.

Ukrainskaya Pravda, where the report on Yushchenko's son first appeared, once was run by Heorhiy Gongadze. He was abducted in 2000 and killed, reportedly in connection with his investigations into high-level corruption. A Kuchma bodyguard later released secretly made tape recordings in which the former president appeared to be ordering action against Gongadze.

Kuchma has not been charged in Gongadze's death and has denied involvement.

Who says it's ok for a journalist to offend you and you have no right to retaliate!?! What a load!

The media also needs to be held responsible!

Yushchenko should tell that to the Marines

It is becoming scary how my allegory of the "Beauty and the Beast" is already coming to pass. Because, Yushchenko is really manifesting his true dyed black and blue colours and they are not orange at all.

The beauty,My fair Lady, her Excellency Yulia Tymoshenko should make a better President of Ukraine.

Yushchenko does not even have company manners.
Imagine his defence of his son being a super consultant earning hundreds of thousands of dollars to live such knight errant life style?

He should tell that to the Marines.

I don't think the press did anything wrong in this case. They were asking how Andriy obtained the funds for his lifestyle. Of course, when it comes to family, it is a personal subject for any person and I can understand V. Yushchenko's reaction.
