Hello...
Has it bothered anybody that when the media or history books discuss great atrocoties in history, they always mentined the holocaust in Germany, or mention mao-Tse-tung in China. Yet the greatest tragedy is arguably the famine in Ukraine in the early '30s. This man-made famine created by the most evil man in modern times, Stalin, wiped out a huge persent of the Ukrainian population, as well as many other Slavic people. yet, the fact that nearly 20 million died a slow, horrible death over several years gets no notice in history books; untill some years ago, they even denied it happened. But it did happen; my father lived thru it in L'viv, and so did my mother and granparents. I would be intersted if anyone has some views or insights on this. I get upset when I hear other nationalities screaming about events that happened 50-60 years ago, still seeking justice, (as they should), yet the plight of Ukrainians during this century gets barely a raised eyebrow.. |

Maybe it's a nature of Ukrainian to forget evil, but should we? So many horrible things happened to Ukraine over years and maybe we should consider them more, so nothing like that happens in future.
I think it would be unappropriate for us to scream and ask for money, like some nations do. But to know the history wether it's good or bad is necessary. |

In reviewing the 20th Century, as every newspaper, magazine and TV network did over the last couple months, I saw no mention anywhere of that Stalin-manufactured famine. It exceeded any tragedy anywhere else on the planet during the whole century. No one really knows how many died. It may have been as many as 40 million. Of course, during the Soviet years, it was ignored within the USSR itself. The others on this planet who know something about it are unable to convey the magnitude of the misery. Good question. The details of it should be taught. There are lessons there, but I don't know what they are now. It's too big to think about.

I hope you guys don't hate me, but this is new news to me
![]() I think if anybody brought it up in conversation here, people would say 'oh yeah the great depression hit us all very hard'. Of course this is different because it's about Stalin. But any I am only one peson... I hope in future this dissaster gets the recognition it deserves. Given the sheer numbers, it rates along the Hollocoust so yes it should have been in the 'that was the century it was' shows, but I wouldn't worry about that. Thx for the info Ukiman. |
