Nationalism V Patriotism.
As anyone will attest, I'm a Ukrainian Patriot (blue & yellow) and stupendously proud to be born in England and to carry a British passport. Some have accused me of being a red & black flag waving Ukie Nationalist. Naturally I object. Am I misguided? Is patriotism the same as nationalism? What do you think? Assuming there is a difference, is it right for one nations patriots to call another nations patriots nationalist? Vlas. |

Steve,
I would say that it depends on the type of nationalism, cultural, social and economic interests, or political, of which one is speaking. Some types I find extremely offensive, and what is occurring in Scotland is one of them. While I see patriotism as defending the interests on one's country, I don't see it as pro-active as is the case with nationalism. I know it is splitting definitional hairs pretty thin, but I do believe there is a difference between the two. Nonson 03.07.01 |

I love my country, I love my language and my culture. I don´t hate any other language, but I think we must speack our language. We must do all to preserve it. Am I a nationalist or a patriot?
Nonson, what about the Scotish people and this problem? |

Greetings Steve,
Excellent topic. I consider PATRIOTISM a VALOR. NATIONALISM is a CURSE. Nationalism tends to become IMPERIALISTIC and is DETACHED from LEGALITY. The Nationalist have a favorite slogan: "They are protecting the interest of their country." Unfortunately the word LEGAL is not to be found in their slogan. Great stuff. |

Grandma,
Certain Scottish nationalists are so radical that they endanger the entire island. I can easily visualize them and the IRA linking up to attack England in an on-going series of terrorist actions. In both Ireland and Scotland there is a lot of hatred of the English and it could be the magnet that draws them together in a loose coalition, and for specific purposes. Right now Scotland poses a manageable problem, but will it remain so in the future? Nonson 03.07.01 |

I have mixed views on this.I am proud of being Scottish even although as a student of history I now know that our nations past is less glorious than we sometimes imagine. However I also have real pride in being British. The Thatcher years were an eye opener for me as Scotland was virtually reduced to the status of a second class nation.I am happy for Scotland to remain as part of the United Kingdom as long as we have a say in our own affairs. The majority of Scots aren't quite as fervent about nationalism or as anti-English as many people think. However if the humiliation of the Thatcher years were ever to occur again even the most moderate Scots would support the nationalist cause.
