Can't watch it!

Hi Nick!
I will advise you that internet users outside of the UK cannot view this BBC IPlayer programme as this media is blocked to non UK internet provider clents. It can only be viewed through proxy server accounts that go through a UK IP address. One of these is the ex-pat shield service, but there are others. Unfortunately this extra connection can slow down the data stream so the viewer needs a fast relaible connection. Also these services can bombard you with advertising as this is the proxy server's revenue spourcing. The best way an ex-pat can get a reliable proxy server connection is to pay for it.

Ukraine's hospitals in decline?

I did get to see that ephisode of the BBC's Holby City where a British doctor went to Ukraine and was shocked by the run down situation of the state hospital service in Ukraine. I am wondering how much this programme was a follow up to a BBC item on Ukraine's hospital service of 2009.

An English Brain Surgeon in Ukraine

Not the previously mentioned fictional TV programme mentioned in this thread, but a BBC television documentary about English brain surgeon Henry Marsh. It would be an emotional viewing by any caring person to see, but the fact that the storyline takes place in a Kiev hospital makes it especially poignant for anyone who cares about Ukraine.
For during almost 1 and a half hours it shows how Henry Marsh and his Ukrainian associate brain surgeon Igor Kurilets work in archaic conditions to save people’s lives. Henry Marsh has been coming to Ukraine for 15 years from his London based hospital to give his services free of charge, taking on surgical operations that the Ukrainian surgeons will not attempt. You see the pain of the surgeons as they have to tell an elderly lady that her 3 year old granddaughter has an inoperable brain tumour and cannot be saved. A beautiful young 23 year old woman believes she is suffering from a tick-borne encephalitis, but her brain scan shows otherwise. She also has an inoperable tumour, will go blind within 18 months, and be subject to a painful and lingering death within 3 to 5 years. Henry Marsh will not tell her the truth, saying she must return soon with her mother for another consultation. The problem for many such patients is late diagnosis. This is often caused by the need of patients to having to save the $80 to $100 USD to pay for the brain scan. Although Henry Marsh gives his services free, the patients must pay the other costs relating to surgery staff and hospital charges.
You see a young man having his skull drilled by Igor Kurilets using a standard electric drill bought from a local DIY store. Henry Marsh then sets about removing a huge tumour from the patient’s brain whilst the patient is still conscious, as the lack of sophisticated modern equipment requires interaction between the surgeon and patient to ensure vital neurological motor skills are not being lost resulting from tissue removal. The operation is a success.
I think the success of a country’s regime can be measured by its ability to offer health care to at risk citizens, where insurance companies cannot or will not pick up the tag. If I had produced this documentary, I would have shown the poor state of the hospital against the numerous Mercedes, Range Rovers and Bentleys etc driving along the street outside, but the BBC avoid such political comment.
To access this TV programme you will need a computer with a fast broadband link via a UK based proxy server (see my previous post within this thread), as domestic BBC programmes are blocked to non UK residents (it may appear on BBC World in future).
