Guys, just calm down and if you have any unanswered questions about Lviv please move them to core discussion. Let's keep this Ukraine-language forum clean.

Vasyl, please do not quote something I did not say. I just said that Lwow is beautiful and it is primarily a result of wise effort of Lwowians through centuries.
Vasyl, you need to know that religion mattered much more than nationality in the distant past. We had a lot of fascinating discussions on it with Kathy and other knowledgeable forumers in the past (years ago already). People were dependent one on another, also because there were not so many of them. Languages were more similar and people mostly spoke, they mostly could not write. Ukrainian nationality for that matter has not been born yet at Khmyelnitski times. Oppression in Rzeczpospolita based on unequal religious status and on treating farmers as half-slaves but it was the same for Polish and Rusyn people. You need to have it in mind all the time during our discussion. Otherwise we can be mislead to think about Yaroslav the Wise as a Ukrainian.
The XIXth century was a crazy time of European nationalisms and collisions were unavoidable in such air.
It will be easier to talk if we realize that. It would be wonderful to borrow something from old times when people treated foreigners with curiosity and hospitality rather than prejudice and enmity. Meeting a foreigner was a rare and interesting experience.

Wise rulers' support mattered much of course. Moreover, you are inaccurate as to historic perception because a lot of buildings in Lwow were erected in the earlier Renaissance period and they are, in my opinion, the most impressive structures in Lwow (Valachian Orthodox Cathedral with gorgeous Kornyakt tower, Latin Cathedral, with the Boim's Chapel, Arsenal, Dominican's church) etc. There are even pre-Renaissance buildings in Lwow, not many because there were terrible fires in Lwow and the most of early Gothic churches needed to be rebuilt. Latin Cathedral was originally built according to a Gothic arctitectural style. A history of the impressive St. George's Greek Catholic Cathedral (ukr. sviaty Yuri, a pope JPII was there in 2002), rebuilt in the half of the XVIII cent., before the Austrian period makes another good example of interesting Baroque-Roccoco style.
I am glad anyway that we talk Lviv at last.
I do not have Ukrainian keyboard and I would be somewhat ashamed of probably using the most strange Ukrainian-Russian mixture but my son would be much helpful because he's fluent in Ukrainian.

OK, I will be saying more in History section now.

I am fully up to it and I'll start working on collecting the lessons. Also I encourage any Ukrainian on this forum to look into Ukrainian grammar or even just present what might be interesting for a new language speaker to learn right away. I know from my own experience that attraction to the language lies not in the rules, but in the sound, funny examples of its use, cool words etc. So, my dear co-patriots, let's put up, everyone even a single sentence or even word with some interesting explanation.
