Washington, March 14 (Bloomberg) -- A U.S. grand jury
indicted Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh on charges he ``set a death
trap'' for Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl in Pakistan,
Attorney General John Ashcroft said.
The British-born Sheikh, now being held in Pakistan, was
charged by a federal grand jury in Trenton, New Jersey, with
conspiring in the hostage-taking that led to the journalist's
death. The Justice Department said the charge is equivalent to
murder.
Pearl, 38, disappeared in the southern Pakistan city of
Karachi on Jan. 23 while investigating links between extremist
Islamic groups and Richard Reid, the Briton accused of trying to
blow up an American Airlines jetliner with explosives in his
shoes. Pearl's execution was videotaped, though his body hasn't
been found.
