Child Adoption by "Gays"- Not in Ukraine

Elton John, a British born celebrity who is in a homesexual relationship wishes to adopt a child from Ukraine.
The Ukrainan authorities say no.
Whilst I'm not a supporter of "Gay" life, I'm thinking that if this child has a chance to be taken out of poverty and into a life with infinitely better prospects, it can't be a bad thing.
What do you think?

That is not the half of it. Lev is a child in a SPECIAL ORPHANAGE for children born of mothers infected w / HIV.
Reason for turn down was Elton John was too old. This is sheer stupidity. Elton may very well outlive this child.

The Problem of the Unwanted Chidren

Hannia's last post and link to the story of Ukraine's unwanted children was reminiscent to that of Romania's "orphanage" homes type stories that were unveiled during the years following the collapse of communism. However, Ukraine's orphanages seem to depict greater standards of care than the Romanian establishments did at that time. It does make me wonder however what the Ukrainian orphanges might have looked like in the early 1990's?

I often think that the acid test for judging the standard of a nation's society can be measured by the way it treats its poor abandoned/ orphaned children. I am aware that it is within my lifetime that Britain stopped the export of certain older children to Canada and Australia, usually to work on remote farms in often obusive circumstances.

My country is now facing the threat of closure for many of its hard won state funded social programmes. The current government have a slogan "The Big Society", in which they hope that voluntary workers and charity will take up the burden of this need. The British government is also reducing the support funding to many organisations that do social work using volunteers, where only senior admin people receive salaries. This is happening at a time when statistically more children are said to be in "poverty" categories.
I fear that we are all moving back to an era, where if there is no profit margin there is no concern.

Pavlenko's decision was based only on one thing and nothing else. The Ukrainian govt refuses to acknowledge the current statistics re extent of Drug Addiction, Prostitution and HIV Infection in Ukraine.

The govt continues to maintain a Stalinist mentality. Deny it and it will not exist.

My mother was very active in fundraising for Ukrainian Orphanages, so I am somewhat familiar w/this subject.

The current situation has improved some, but not because of govt funding. Most orphanage support comes from outside of Ukraine. For example, one of our members, sjoyce, is active in a group that raises funds for this cause. The org pays retired babas to hold orphans. It's a win-win for the babas, who get to supplement their meager pensions, and for the children, who get to be held and get to feel some loving kindness.

There are also individual patrons like Elton John, who contributed appx 4 million dollars last yr to orphanages populated w/children infected with AIDS. Notwithstanding, if one is a homophobe or an ageist, the decision to turn down Elton John and his partner cannot be called a smart one.
