This summer I'm returning to Odessa. Could anybody here suggest any decent music shops or bands I can look for. To be more specific, I'm looking for metal bands that sing in Russian and/or Ukrainian. I'm a big fan of Aria, obviously, and have a lot of their CD's. I've heard Master and Kruiz. When I surfded the net looking for Russian bands, it's a bunch of black and death metal groups, but not really my cup of tea. I'm interested in more traditional (or "old school") heavy metal, and melodic power metal bands.

About Aria, I really like their earlier albums from the 80's like "C'Kem Tbi" (Whom are you With), "Heroe Asfalta" (Hero of Asphalt), and "Igra C ognem" (playing with fire), because they're as good as any album ever made by any American or European group. Personally, I think a lot of the Russian rock music I heard, made during the Soviet era, is awful. Aria is the exception. However, I think music scene of the CIS has really caught up, and now has it's own identity.

I heard some Aria during my last visit to Ukraine.
I like Aria too, but you cannot buy their music on Amazon I promise you!!!

There are many great musical talents in Russia/Ukraine but I'm not a metal head or anything. I think there is a Russian group called Troll that is highly regarded by fans of that genre. Maybe you should ask about them on the Russia.com forum for more accurate info, sorry I'm not much of a help

Hehe, what metal bands are notable from Ukraine? And I mean traditional heavy metal (like Iron Maiden (UK)), or bands like Destruction (GER)? I do not mean the 'rap plus distorted and downtuned guitars' stuff that seems to be dying off over here in the US recently ( ).

The only one I'm aware of is Nokturnal Mortem, a NSBM band. Wish there was more to account for than just a Nazi band...

You think Iron Maiden has some unique or special musical talent that could not be reproduced by musicians in Ukraine?
Iron Maiden's tunes are faithfully reproduced by common US garage bands for crying out loud. And their gifts as songwriters are nothing to write home about either.

Sorry I cannot give you some names of popular metal groups in Ukraine...but my ignorance does not exclude the possibility that such groups exist. I know some knowledgable people in Ukraine and can ask them for recommendations if your interest is serious.

Argh, that's not what I was implying I am looking for NAMES of "real" heavy metal bands from Ukraine so I can check them out. NM is the only group I am even aware of.

Iron Maiden are gods. Please explain these better groups? You could cull names like Dream Theatre who are obviously better musicians, but ultimately couldn't write an album's worth of decent material to save their lives

As far as better groups...this depends entirely on your personal tastes. Some songs by popular US/UK groups are performed by Ukrainian bands in Russian language, besides their original stuff. All of it sounded pretty good to me at the time...I will see what names I can dig up.

Thumbs up

Thanks Mainly looking for 'original' bands and not 'cover' material

Edit: Reread your post and noticed the comment about covers in addition to original material. Glad I reread this. Thanks for names to come...
