Dobriden!
I am starting this thread as a means for Ukrainians to share terrific Ukrainian and other eastern European modern art with other Ukrainians. In any following threads if you could so kindly post the artist's name, their style, contributions, and if possible where the public can find examples of their art (whether it be the internet or not). Hopefully this thread will result in bringing many people closer to a very unique and relevant segment of the contemporary arts world. Thanks to all who participate! (I apologize if my english is less than perfect) |

Hello again, it has been awhile since I have been here.
Anyway, I stumbled across a good site. It is for the Soros Centre for Contemporary Arts in Kiev. The Centre is located in the ancient Podil district of Kiev. From what I have seen and heard CCA is quite terrific in what it brings as a link to art community home and abroad. It's worth a click. http://www.cca.kiev.ua:8101/main.html This link leads to an artist list where you can explore images of artist's works as well as other related information. As well, I will be starting a small site soon that will focus on the problems of creating modern art in what is considered to be a pre-modern state (our beloved Ukraina!). Anyway, I hope the link proves useful. Enjoy! |

Hello
I'd like to ask Nonson, and VD to remove the last two posts they made to this thread "modern Ukrainian art". It's not that I don't mind the use of humour on these boards; instead I find some of it quite enjoyable. However, Ukrainian art is something I am serious about, and I would like to keep this thread focused entirely on it. I would appreciate the removal of the last two posts. If there were any posts that have offended anyone that I have made, I would gladly take them down too. Thanks. |

Hello out there.
I heard a bit of news regarding the first international event/exhibition in Venice. The story is one that is not untouched by the corruption of the Kuchma government. The first Ukrainian event commisioner Evchen Karas and curator Yuri Onuch were fired after Onuch was critical of Kuchma in a letter he penned earlier that year. Onuch is the comissioner of the Soros art centre in Kyiv. Onuch chose the Masoch Foundation to represent Ukraine, and in defiance, Ukraine's other leading artist, Arsen Savadov publicly pied Onuch, whilst shouting, "This is for Ukrainian art!" Savadov was also upset because Onuch was not an actual born citizen, but an ethnic Ukrainian from Canada. Ironically, Savadov was working in New York at the time of independence in 1991. The event in Venice, the Bienalle went off in June. I am yet to here of any incidence there, or comments on the show. |

The way the first organizers were kicked out doesn't suprise me. There are many artists in Kyiv that I have heard have lost funding grants becuase some of their work showed opposition to the Kuchma government in some way. It seems like "Red Nostalgia" from my view.
