Dangerous places?

Hello,
I never been to Kiev (or Ukraine for that matter) but if I want to study there, what places would you recommend?

Are there some areas that are not that safe, and less popular for a 22years old girl (who doesn't speak the language) to live in? What are the names of the more safe places?

Would it be a good idea to rent an apartment close to Kreshchatik Street (that's downtown, right?)? I like it to be close to everything but in a quiet and nice area.

I do not live in Ukraine, but in Sweden. Surely you will get good suggestions from other forum members.

In the matter of "safety", please let me suggest you to consider also some cultural issues. My reason to write this is that I have some knowledge about both East adn West Europe (including Sweden).
