If you have the time and wherewithal, there are volunteer orgs in Ukraine that can probably use your skills. Living in Ukraine on that basis will help one feel productive and help create social circles at same time.

This land is becoming corrupt and it is just not the way I want to live out my life. I am not downing America, it is a good place to live, just not for me. I am trying very hard to gain information on how I can live decently in Ukraine. I am not in need of luxuries, but just daily necessities that allow you to live humane.

I do plan on finishing out my schooling and getting my diploma, and then going on to some collage or university. So I guess that will always help in finding a job.

I see that the people are very kind and generous, which is good, but I also see that it is where you move to as well. I must say that my heart is in Europe, and I see the Ukraine as the most obvious choice for me.

I do thank you again for your help,

Kevin

Hi Kevin,
I am in Simferopol. I have 12 years of experience developing websites as a UI and UX designer. I came here to visit a friend and to setup a team of developers for 3 projects we have in Barcelona. I lived in Miami for 16 years and I am a resident of the US, although I am a Spaniard. From my experience I have to tell you there is two musts in order to come here and live. One is to know Russian or Ukrainian fluently. This is not the case for me, and it has been tough @ a interpersonal level. Although I am a fast learner and I can communicate now after 6 months. If you know any of this languages fluently it will be a huge plus for you. The other is to get your immigration papers in order, if you plan to work here. You will have to deal with bureaucracy in Ukraine, which is long and painful. Most programmers I met, work for overseas companies. Ideally you can build relationships in the US and then leverage them here in Ukraine. This will give you a comfortable way of living. Buying a house will also be a problem, if you want to stay for the long term, since only Ukrainians can do this.

Crimea, I must say is beautiful and calm. I have been here in Summer, fall and winter. Every season has its beauty. Summer the sea, Yalta, Foros, Sudac, Kazantip and all great places. Fall the mountains and winter the snow and the celebrations. To travel within Crimea the bus system is great. Buy food in the market (рынок), and make sure you get food with the price written down. Also you will find an incredible selection of natural fruits (Apples, Pears, Grapes), vegetables (Carrots, potatoes, lettuce...). Price is quite affordable. The best meats are poultry and pork. Red cow meat is not very abundant. You can also buy in the supermarkets, but foods are processed and you will get a huge variety of import goods. A very similar selection to any US supermarket. The health system is not very good, so my best advice is to take care of yourself and be healthy Diagnostics are not great and it is not easy to find good doctors. One last thing, get ready to drink cognac and vodka... beer also is common, as well as the incredible variety of excellent sweet Crimean wines. Drinking is part of the bonding and social tradition here.

The way of living is family oriented and very classic European and mostly rural. It often reminds me of Spain in the 70s and 80s. People are extremely welcoming and for me it was easy to feel @ home from the first instant I arrived.

Best of luck to you!
Francisco

"Buying a house will also be a problem, if you want to stay for the long term, since only Ukrainians can do this." Why do you think so? There is not such a prohibition.
Foreigners cannot be owners of agricultural land plots only.

Thanks for your reply Pipper. Maybe this was my perception since i was looking @ plots in different villages and not in the city. Thanks for clarifying this.
