And honestly, you think 17th century war was a happy fairy-tale? Quote:

Don't worry, I was routing for my ancestors all through the movie.Hahahaha, "foreigner" since 1991, huh? Funny how 250 million peoples' ability to "notice" things evaporated overnight based on a descision made by three guys that night in Belovezha... Zbyszek Quote:
Oj ne p`jet'sja gorilochka, ne p`jut'sja j medy Ne budete shynkuvaty, prokljati zhydy Oj ne p`jet'sja teje pyvo, a ja budu pyt' Ne dam zhe ja vrazhym ljakham v Ukrajini zhyt'. ... Antisemitism and hatred of Poles all together in four lines! Open Kobzar' almost anywhere and you see bigotry and hatred practically bursting from the page. It's Shevchenko's amazing talent at poetry that counts rather than the actual content of the poems... Quote:
I saw it on TV in Russia and liked it so much I ordered it on DVD as well. It's such a good movie... And so authentic, too - makes you feel as if you're there.

I especially like these lines from the movie... Skrzetuski: Rozdzielmy sie. Bedzie latwiej o jenca. Wolodyjowski: I ja tak mysle... Skrzetuski: Pierwszy oddzial wezme ja, drugi ty Michale, pan Podbipieta trzeci, a pan Zagloba pojdzie zrodkiem miedzy wami. Zagloba: Ja? Skrzetuski: Jezeli nie chcesz, czwarty oddzial wezmie wachmistrz. Zagloba: Wezmie, ale pod moja komenda! A pytalem bo zal mi sie zal z wami rozstac. Zabloba is so funny... ![]() P.S. The nasal letters e and a (with little tails) - would they be written as "e"/"a" or "en"/"an" where special characters are absent?

Hi Petro, you can write these characters like that but the best way would be to use Central European (Windows) coding for the Internet Explorer. Try it: Skrzetuski: Rozdzielmy się. Będzie łatwiej o jeńca. Wołodyjowski: I ja tak myślę... Skrzetuski: Pierwszy oddział wezmę ja, drugi ty Michale, pan Podbipięta trzeci, a pan Zagłoba pójdzie środkiem między wami. Zagłoba: Ja? Skrzetuski: Jeżeli nie chcesz, czwarty oddział weźmie wachmistrz. Zagłoba: Weźmie, ale pod moją komendą! A pytałem bo żal mi sie żal z wami rozstać. (Oh yes, it so typical of Zagloba!) Someone told me thst Sienkiewicz was quite popular in Russia in the end of XIXth century. In fact, a lot of his works were devoted to our struggle for independence from the Germans. He could not write about the Tzarist oppresion of course because of the censorship. I visited Sienkiewicz's museum in Wola Okrzejska during my trip with the American guests. There are cute wooden statues there of Zagloba, Podbipieta and other figures from Sienkiewicz's works. My cousin does not speak or read Polish but when she started to read the novel in good English translation, the nights were too short for her. There are a lot of non-translated Ukrainian expressions in the book and there are beautiful descriptions of Ukrainain landscape. A lot of local customs are mentioned. You can learn Ukrainian geography quite well from this novel. Domogarov - a Russian actor, who played Bohun, became very popular in Poland, the same with Bohdan Stupka who was further employed by Jerzy Hoffman and starrred in his next film based on a story about the legendary beginnings of Poland - "The Old Tale" (Stara Basn). |

Hello, Zbyszek. Despite the fact that I am leaving the forum, I would like to continue this discussion over email. Please click on the "mail" button at the bottom of this post so we can further discuss Sienkiewicz's work.
