obody takes those movies seriously as a historical document, just fantasy , amusement , successful effort to revive almost dead Polish cinema industry.

Movies aren't supposed to be historical documents - cinema is an art.

Maybe you , foreigner, do not notice it , but for us it is clear.

Maybe you, national-patriots, read to much into it. Don't worry, I was routing for my ancestors all through the movie.
Hahahaha, "foreigner" since 1991, huh? Funny how 250 million peoples' ability to "notice" things evaporated overnight based on a descision made by three guys that night in Belovezha...

Neither Shevchenko nor Sienkiewicz did not displayed this quality.

I don't know about Sienkiewicz, but Shevchenko definitely... let us remember the lines,

Antisemitism and hatred of Poles all together in four lines! Open Kobzar' almost anywhere and you see bigotry and hatred practically bursting from the page. It's Shevchenko's amazing talent at poetry that counts rather than the actual content of the poems...

I saw it on TV in Russia and liked it so much I ordered it on DVD as well. It's such a good movie... And so authentic, too - makes you feel as if you're there.

"The Lighthouse Keeper" that little masterpiece which I absolutely love. Petro, please read it, it is my recommendation.

I printed it out and read it a few hours back... I found it very touching - to a Pole it must be even more heartwarming. I especially liked how it shows no animosity towards anyone - just quiet love for one's country.

Specific sense of humour displayed in Sienkiewicz's stories is also something I really admire. Let us see Zagloba - a drunkard, boaster and coward - nothing to be impressed but his famous LOL talks became a part of live Polish language and exist until today.

It is interesting how he has that way with humor... one second you're laughing at Zagloba's antics, the next you're watching people get hanged. I suppose there's a kind of metaphor for life in that...

I especially like these lines from the movie...

Hi Petro, you can write these characters like that but the best way would be to use Central European (Windows) coding for the Internet Explorer.

Someone told me thst Sienkiewicz was quite popular in Russia in the end of XIXth century. In fact, a lot of his works were devoted to our struggle for independence from the Germans. He could not write about the Tzarist oppresion of course because of the censorship.

I visited Sienkiewicz's museum in Wola Okrzejska during my trip with the American guests. There are cute wooden statues there of Zagloba, Podbipieta and other figures from Sienkiewicz's works. My cousin does not speak or read Polish but when she started to read the novel in good English translation, the nights were too short for her. There are a lot of non-translated Ukrainian expressions in the book and there are beautiful descriptions of Ukrainain landscape. A lot of local customs are mentioned. You can learn Ukrainian geography quite well from this novel.
Domogarov - a Russian actor, who played Bohun, became very popular in Poland, the same with Bohdan Stupka who was further employed by Jerzy Hoffman and starrred in his next film based on a story about the legendary beginnings of Poland - "The Old Tale" (Stara Basn).
