The name Taras Shevchenko comes up often...Is he the most known poet from the Ukraine? Is there any single poem that is his masterpiece?

Yes, Taras Shewchenko is the most famous Ukrainian poet.

I don't think there is any specifiec poem that is considered to be his main masterpiece. However, there is a number of very famous ones.
