Can you help to find a book?
Hi all,
despite having ISBN number, I have been unable to find this book on the net. I've looked on amazon, rumvi.com and others, but can't get a hit on these details. I suppose I could contact or email, but first does anyone have any suggestion or know a Ukrainian bookseller on the web? Wolodymyr, I send you warm hello from Dnipropetrovsk.
I noticed your interesting posts here , and I want to ask you some questions as well. First - What do the English say ( think , feel...) when hear your surname ? it is very Ukrainan and very popular in our region. To my shame I haven't heard anything about the book. I can call them or come to their office to learn. it is just in the center of the city. |

Hello Serhii, thankyou, and a warm hello from Scotland too, although the weather is not so warm as we had a little snow overnight. I am happy to answer any questions you may have.
My surname, yes there are two things happen when I give my name; First, people here are always interested, and most will say, 'aah, that's an unusual name, where does it come from?' - so I of course answer that my father is Ukrainian. Sometimes they ask more questions, and on one occaision last year, when I took my father for an appointment, I was surprised, because the person then said, 'well my father is Ukrainian too!', and we had a long conversation. Second, because the name is unusual here, some people have difficulty writing it down, it seems simple doesn't it, - B I L Y K , and I say it slowly so they can write it down one letter at a time. If I say it quickly they always end up with BYLIK If I need to give my middle name Wolodymyr, I definitely have to take it one letter a a time, I think most people could spell Vladimir, but most have never heard Wolodymyr. Interesting to know that Bilyk is common in your area, my family are in Kostopol. Regarding the book, the reason I have an interest in it is that it features a chapter on my uncle Kostya, Konstantin Bilyk who seems to have known the author, as there is also a picture of them together in the book. He has written poems that are published in this book. I have seen a copy, and I don't know what the theme of the book is, as my Ukrainian language is very poor, but I want to get a copy to translate and understand what is in there. I was trying to find an internet book seller to order the book through, for example, I am just looking at website books.if.ua and although the publisher is there, the book is not. I haven't found the publisher website yet, but if you could help in any small way, that would be great. ![]() Wolodymyr Last edited by Wolodymyr; 8th January 2011 at 10:54. Reason: font problem |

Hello Wolodymyr ,
Thank you for the answers , it was very funny to learn how you cope with your very Ukrainian names in the English speaking ocean. Your surname is very common here in Central Ukraine as well. I have good friends with such one , and am going to tell them about your troubles. I can’t even imagine a Hamish MacDonald ( or so ) in our environment . For sure he would have more troubles then you do. Please , say my warm hello to your father. He grew you up in love and respect to Ukraine. It wasn’t easy for sure. As for the book. I hope to call them tomorrow , and perhaps to find some time to visit their office next week. We still have Orthodox Christmas celebrations and tomorrow come back to work after a short break. The publishing house is well known in our region. They like to publish serious books on history , ethnography , etc. I think it is wonderful if your relative is one of the authors. The weather here is similar to yours – calm and frosty with little snow. I wouldn’t call it comfortable. |
