When I go to L'viv, will it be better for me to speak English, try to learn a bit of Ukrainian, or what? I'm looking for a Ukrainian/English phrase program for my PalmPilot, but I'm not having any luck - they only have Russian, and I'm assuming English in the Ukraine would be better than me trying to pronounce Russian? Thanks |

Yo, Stevenholty! My advice to you - there's no point sweating over Ukrainian unless you really like learning foreigh languages. Well, it is a beautiful language actually. But if your ability to communicate is your only concern, I am sure you can speak English and be fine. Many people in Ukraine in general speak Ukraine. So I think you will be fine. Just don't speak any Russian in L'viv
Hehe.

Hi Steven
If you are going to Ukraine then you should learn some Ukrainian, out of respect if nothing else. In Lviv following the despicable murder of Ihor Bilozir there was a backlash against everything Russian. However, this has died down now (people are quite rightly still appalled at the murder) and people will speak to you in Russian in restaurants and bars etc. Just make an effort and you'll find out why Ukies are some of the best people in the world. :-) In Kyiv I've found that people are genuinely shocked (pleasantly so) when you speak to them in Ukrainian, sometimes they repeat the key words back to you in Russian to ensure everything's understood. But even here spoken Ukrainian is become increasing more popular. East of Kyiv and Crimea well that's a different story... I hope you enjoy (enjoyed) your visit... Vlas |
