Can someone give the translation of the word Shkoda in English or explain what it means

Shkoda can have several meanings:
- to do or to make some "shkoda" = to make some trouble or mess
- if some body say :"oh well, shkoda" = "oh well, too bad" or "Sorry" as it was mentioned before.

The word "SHKODA" can also mean: "in vain" and "uselessly"

My girlfriend from Ukr. uses this word on me maybe in this meaning, certainly not as sorry. I understand it is not necessarily meant negative. I understand it can also mean a person is always in the opposite. Am I correct?
