Just wondering about the difference in dialects that would identify the particular dialect for different foods.

My grandparents use the pronunciation for perogy as follows:

PED-DA-HEH

For cornmeal, they pronounce:

NAH-CHING-KA

For cabbage roll, they pronounce:

HOLE-UP-TSEE

Is this standard Ukrainian, or is it identifiable as being a regional dialect?

Sorry if my question seems strange, I'm just an english speaker unfortunately.

Holuptsy are the mainstream name for cabbage rolls, nachinka is also a regular word, means stuffing.

What about piroge or pirohe with emphasis on the last vowel?

Pirogi with the stress on the last vowel is also widely used in Eastern Ukraine, albeit it means something else.

I'd like to say that in Central and Eastern Ukraine we have both pyrohy and varenyky - two different food. You may have pyrohy with different nachynka ( special meat, fruit...)and varenyky again with different ingrediets. Both are amazingly tasty ....mmmm !

In Polish pyrih is ' pierog' with a special mark above 'O'
(= to read like U ). Holubci are very popular among Ukrainians as well.
