Just wondering about the difference in dialects that would identify the particular dialect for different foods.
My grandparents use the pronunciation for perogy as follows: PED-DA-HEH For cornmeal, they pronounce: NAH-CHING-KA For cabbage roll, they pronounce: HOLE-UP-TSEE Is this standard Ukrainian, or is it identifiable as being a regional dialect? Sorry if my question seems strange, I'm just an english speaker unfortunately. |

I'd like to say that in Central and Eastern Ukraine we have both pyrohy and varenyky - two different food. You may have pyrohy with different nachynka ( special meat, fruit...)and varenyky again with different ingrediets. Both are amazingly tasty ....mmmm !
In Polish pyrih is ' pierog' with a special mark above 'O' (= to read like U ). Holubci are very popular among Ukrainians as well. |
